Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money.
Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.
Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money.
As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money.
For everyone, everywhere.
More about our mission and what we offer.
Job DescriptionAbout Servicing Platform
At Wise, we are on a mission to build money without borders -instant, convenient, transparent and eventually free. Behind every transaction lies a critical responsibility: holding over £20B+ in customer balances, moving £145B+ across borders annually and protecting innocent customers from fraudsters, sanctioned entities and financial crime.
The Servicing Platform sits at the very heart of this mission. We build the foundational identity engines, high-throughput risk platforms and real-time APIs that power all customer servicing, onboarding and risk decisions across Wise globally.
As Wise expands its engineering presence in Hyderabad, we are building core execution capability to modernize our identity and risk infrastructure. As a Backend Engineer (IC3), you will tackle real-time scale challenges, execute complex system migrations and onboard products to next-generation risk APIs that gate billions in cross-currency volume.
What You Will Be Working On
You will join a high-velocity engineering squad focused on platform adoption and system reliability:
Platform Implementation & Migrations: Drive the hands-on technical integration of Wise products onto our modernized Identity, Account and Risk APIs. You will unblock product and FinCrime squads by executing key migrations such as deprecating legacy models and services and improving integrations into Fin Crime domains.
High-Performance Infrastructure: Build, maintain and optimize low-latency, high-availability microservices. You’ll work toward achieving sub second risk check speeds for real-time transactions.
Data Lineage & Governance: Implement robust schemas, data contracts and immutable data flows to ensure complete auditability and data consistency across the full customer and transaction lifecycle.
Operational Excellence: Maintain the operational health (SLAs/SLOs, monitoring, alerting) of critical platform components. Participate in incident resolution and post-mortems to ensure zero downtime for money moving out of Wise.
Global Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams (Product, FinCrime, Risk Assessment) and engineering peers across London, Tallinn and Hyderabad.
What We Are Looking For
Backend Proficiency: 4 to 8 years of software development experience using Java (Java 11/17+) and the Spring/Spring Boot ecosystem (or equivalent modern backend tech like Kotlin/Go).
System & API Design: Solid understanding of microservice architectures, clean REST/gRPC API design, relational/non-relational databases (Mongo/PostgreSQL/SQL query optimization) and schema design.
Event-Driven Architectures: Hands-on experience or familiarity with asynchronous messaging, event-driven architectures (Kafka), idempotency and distributed system resilience patterns.
Migrations & Integrations: Demonstrated track record of refactoring systems, integrating complex APIs or breaking down legacy monolithic services.
Quality & Observability Mindset: Care for code quality, automated testing, distributed tracing, metrics and security best practices.
Infrastructure: virtualization (docker/docker-compose), terraform, CI/CD (github, spinnaker), at least basic knowledge of Kubernetes
Product & Customer Ownership: You care about why something is being built and how your backend services directly impact the end-user experience and platform safety.
Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Comfortable working across geographies and time zones (Hyderabad / London / Tallinn / Singapore).
Familiarity with the concept of System Design and RFC process.
Should we add something like “Familiar/enthusiastic about coding agents like Claude Code/Codex/Cursor”, understanding of principles of MCP?
For everyone, everywhere. We're people building money without borders — without judgement or prejudice, too. We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive.
We're proud to have a truly international team, and we celebrate our differences.
Inclusive teams help us live our values and make sure every Wiser feels respected, empowered to contribute towards our mission and able to progress in their careers.
