We are seeking a Senior API Engineer to help develop and operate an omnichannel API platform supporting a large Australian retailer. The platform enables consistent digital experiences across web, mobile, and in-store channels.
This is a hands-on engineering role focused on building reliable, scalable APIs using Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL, REST, and AWS. You will contribute to technical design, application development, infrastructure-as-code, production support, and the ongoing improvement of the platform.
Key responsibilities- Design, develop, test, and maintain APIs within a GraphQL-based omnichannel platform
- Build reliable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript
- Design and evolve GraphQL schemas while following established schema governance and API standards
- Develop and maintain AWS infrastructure using AWS CDK and TypeScript
- Work with AWS services including ECS, Fargate, VPC, Application Load Balancer, CloudWatch, and related platform services
- Contribute to technical design discussions and provide practical input into solution approaches
- Diagnose and resolve production issues across application and infrastructure layers
- Improve API performance, scalability, reliability, observability, and security
- Write automated tests and participate in code reviews
- Support continuous integration, deployment, and operational practices
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, product teams, and delivery teams across Vietnam and Australia
- Share technical knowledge and support less-experienced engineers when required
Requirements
- Strong experience developing backend services or API platforms
- Advanced proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript
- Strong understanding of asynchronous programming, error handling, type safety, and application performance
- Practical experience designing and developing GraphQL and/or REST APIs
- Good understanding of GraphQL schema design, resolvers, federation, versioning, caching, and performance optimisation
- Experience building and maintaining cloud infrastructure using AWS CDK and TypeScript
- Experience with AWS services such as ECS, Fargate, VPC, Application Load Balancer, CloudWatch, IAM, and Secrets Manager
- Strong understanding of backend engineering and distributed system fundamentals
- Experience diagnosing application and infrastructure issues in production environments
- Good understanding of automated testing, code quality, CI/CD, observability, and secure engineering practices
- Ability to work independently on complex engineering tasks
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with distributed and cross-functional teams
- Experience delivering eCommerce or omnichannel retail platforms
- Experience with high-traffic or highly integrated enterprise systems
- Experience with performance testing and API optimisation
- Exposure to modern DevOps and site reliability engineering practices
- Experience working with teams distributed across multiple countries and time zones
