About This Role
Socomec is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join our Energy Storage Systems (ESS) R&D team. This role will focus on the development, integration, testing, and commissioning of advanced battery energy storage and microgrid control solutions for the North American market. The successful candidate will play a key role in designing automation architectures, developing control logic, supporting product certification activities, and working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to bring innovative energy solutions to market.
Key Responsibilities And Accountabilities
- Design and develop automation and control solutions for battery energy storage systems and microgrid applications.
- Configure and validate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, communication networks, and site controllers.
- Support integration of PCS, BMS, protection systems, power meters, and third-party equipment.
- Develop test procedures and execute factory and field validation activities.
- Troubleshoot complex control and communication issues during development and commissioning.
- Collaborate with electrical, software, mechanical, and certification teams to deliver compliant and reliable products.
Essential Qualifications, Experience, And Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in industrial automation, power systems, renewable energy, microgrids, or energy storage applications.
- Strong knowledge of PLC programming, industrial communications, and SCADA systems.
- Experience with Modbus, CAN, IEC 61850, DNP3, or other utility/industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with HIL simulation, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of complex systems.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to travel occasionally within North America and internationally.
Compensation: $120,000 to $150,000 CAD

Skills Required
- Bachelor's degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related discipline
- 10-15 years of experience in industrial automation, power systems automation, microgrids, renewable energy integration, or battery energy storage systems
- Leadership of complex automation projects from concept through commissioning
- Extensive experience with PLC programming, HMI development, EMS/PMS systems, SCADA platforms, communication protocols, and network architectures
- Experience with utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems
- Experience managing Hardware-in-the-Loop simulation platforms
- Experience supporting certification programs including UL9540, UL9540A, UL1741SB, CSA, IEEE, and NFPA standards
- Professional Engineer designation or eligibility
- Advanced knowledge of automation architecture, controls engineering, and power management systems for BESS, microgrids, and distributed energy resources
- Expert-level experience with PLC programming, HMI/SCADA development, site controllers, Energy Management Systems, and industrial automation platforms
- Expertise in industrial networking, cybersecurity, communication protocols, and network infrastructure design
- Experience integrating PCS, BMS, protection relays, generators, photovoltaic systems, meters, switchgear, and third-party equipment
- Experience developing and deploying HIL, SIL, simulation, and automated validation environments
- Understanding of electrical power systems, utility interconnection requirements, protection and control philosophies, grid-support functions, and microgrid operation
- Experience with FAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and field support for mission-critical systems
- Knowledge of UL 9540, UL 9540A, NFPA 855, IEEE, CSA, NEC, and utility-specific requirements
- Ability to lead complex technical projects, develop engineering standards, and provide technical direction across multidisciplinary teams
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, system-level troubleshooting, and technical risk assessment capabilities
- Availability for frequent national and international travel
- Valid passport for international travel
- Master's degree
