Your work environment at EXP

Based in our Halifax office, you will join EXP’s collaborative architectural practice and help lead the planning and delivery of K-12 and post-secondary projects throughout Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.

You will work with school districts, government departments, colleges, universities, educators, facilities teams, students, community representatives, and multidisciplinary consultants to create inclusive, adaptable, sustainable, and durable learning environments. Your work may include new schools and academic buildings, additions, renovations, campus renewals, specialized teaching and research spaces, and projects delivered within occupied facilities.

As a senior member of the architectural team, you will provide education-sector insight, project leadership, client service, and mentorship. You will help translate educational and operational requirements into clear planning and design solutions while maintaining alignment with budget, schedule, technical requirements, and long-term institutional priorities.
 
What a day at EXP has in store for you

• Lead K-12 and post-secondary projects from programming and concept design through construction and closeout. 
• Work with clients and user groups to define educational, functional, operational, and facility requirements. 
• Lead or participate in programming workshops, stakeholder consultations, visioning sessions, presentations, and option-evaluation exercises. 
• Translate teaching, learning, student-service, administrative, community-use, and facility requirements into coordinated architectural solutions. 
• Establish project work plans and coordinate architects, interns, technologists, engineers, landscape architects, specialty consultants, and cost consultants. 
• Guide the preparation and coordination of design documents, Revit models, specifications, reports, presentations, and construction documents. 
• Lead interdisciplinary design and technical reviews to confirm alignment among the program, drawings, specifications, cost plan, schedule, client standards, and regulatory requirements. 
• Incorporate accessibility, universal design, sustainability, resilience, energy performance, durability, security, and student well-being into project planning and design. 
• Support project teams during procurement and construction, including tender questions, addenda, submittals, RFIs, site reviews, change management, deficiency review, and closeout. 
• Maintain strong client relationships and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
• Mentor architects, interns, designers, and technologists and contribute to education-sector standards, tools, research, and lessons learned. 
• Contribute to proposals, interviews, project pursuits, client presentations, and the continued growth of EXP’s education practice in Atlantic Canada. 
• Travel to project sites and client meetings throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as required.

What your experience looks like

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture from an accredited institution. 
• Licensed architect with 10+ years of progressively responsible experience and eligibility for registration with the Nova Scotia Association of Architects. 
• Demonstrated experience leading K-12, college, university, or comparable complex institutional projects through multiple phases of project delivery. 
• Experience with educational programming, stakeholder engagement, architectural planning, design development, construction documentation, and construction-phase services. 
• Experience leading multidisciplinary consultant teams and coordinating complex technical and operational requirements. 
• Experience with both new construction and renovation or renewal projects is preferred. 
• Knowledge of Canadian building codes, accessibility requirements, construction systems, procurement processes, and contract administration. 
• Understanding of inclusive learning environments, sustainability, resilience, adaptability, and long-term facility performance. 
• Proficiency with Revit and familiarity with contemporary architectural documentation, coordination, and presentation tools. 
• Strong facilitation, presentation, technical writing, organization, and client-service skills. 
• Ability to manage competing priorities, provide clear design and technical direction, mentor developing staff, and work effectively across multiple offices. 
• Experience with public-sector education projects in Nova Scotia or Atlantic Canada is an asset. 
• Experience with proposal development, project interviews, and education-sector business development is an asset.
