We're looking for a strong Underwriter with a background in payments and/or financial analysis to join our Platforms Underwriting team in London. You will be part of a team that is responsible for underwriting applications for customers utilising Checkout.com’s solution for platforms, primarily Payment Facilitators, Marketplaces and Staged Digital Wallet Operators. This is a team which focuses on analysis relevant to Business Model, Credit Exposure and enhanced Financial Analysis. This role offers a unique exposure to our core business areas, collaborating closely with our key internal players (Business Development, Sales, Risk, Legal teams and Top Management) and our high value merchants and partners.
How you'll make an impact:

  • Leveraging experience, you will conduct business model analysis in-line with internal policy guidelines and apply complex evaluation techniques to achieve the desired results for complex deals
  • Conduct proficient analysis of P&L, balance sheet and cash flow statements of complex business models and demonstrate a competent understanding of accounting principles
  • Competent in underwriting high risk lines of business including travel, subscriptions, ticketing and events, securities dealers, gambling, amongst others
  • Conducting Customer due diligence checks including KYC and KYB on merchant applications
  • Prepare persuasive summaries to assess micro and macro risks, mitigants and make balanced recommendations to present to management and the Credit Risk Committee
  • Represent Underwriting in attending customer calls and meetings alongside Sales or Account Management
  • Approve teammates’ credit submissions in line with delegated approval authority
  • Identify operational issues and areas for improvement, and make detailed recommendations on how to improve the merchant onboarding experience
  • Preferable if candidate possesses industry expertise, and can act as a subject matter expert in a particular industry
  • Foster a culture of collaboration with key internal stakeholders, in particular Sales, and first and second line Risk personnel and Legal
  • Act as a mentor to junior team members through training initiatives and credit approvals
  • Contribute to Underwriting driven projects as required

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of work experience related to merchant underwriting or equivalent underwriting work
  • Subject matter expertise in underwriting and financial analysis with demonstrated ability to make sound judgments, balancing risk and reward
  • Ability to continually monitor and manage competing priorities and adjust accordingly
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, you have a ‘customer first’ approach to delivering creative solutions for our merchants and will contribute to cross team collaboration and building a One Team culture.
  • Competent escalation management - act with urgency to ensure escalations are prioritised, owned, and resolved effectively
  • You have a passion for operational improvement initiatives, and can contribute to broader department initiatives and projects
  • Leading by example, you'll demonstrate our core Values and live out our Operating Principles in everything you do
  • Previous experience coaching, mentoring, or leading teams is desirable although non-required


Experience you'll bring to the role

  • Work in a team that uses qualitative and quantitative targets to measure performance
  • Demonstrable experience related to merchant underwriting, credit insurance and/or commercial lending
  • Expert-level financial statement analysis and credit exposure assessment ability
  • Experience with concise written and oral presentations, and ability to deliver complex messages in a clear and focused manner
  • A highly analytical team player who loves to evaluate financial and business risks
  • Domain expertise within the payments industry will be preferable
