Te tūranga – The role   

Join the Actuarial team within the Financial Stability Group. The team supports effective prudential supervision of New Zealand’s insurance sector by providing specialist actuarial advice and insights on insurer solvency, financial position and emerging risks.

As Senior Advisor – Actuarial, you will provide authoritative, sound and timely actuarial advice and technical support to prudential supervisors, management and other areas of the Reserve Bank. Your work will focus on assessing insurers’ ongoing solvency compliance and financial position, identifying and monitoring emerging stress and risk, supporting insurer crisis management, and contributing to industry-wide stress testing and thematic reviews. You will engage regularly with insurance supervisors, policy and stress-testing teams, senior leaders, licensed insurers, appointed actuaries, industry bodies and regulatory agencies in New Zealand and overseas.

In this role you will:  

  • Act as a reviewing actuary, providing authoritative advice on actuarial information relating to licensing, transfers and other supervisory matters, with a strong focus on assessing solvency compliance.
  • Identify and report circumstances that may indicate distress within a licensed insurer or across the insurance sector.
  • Provide technical and intellectual leadership in developing risk-based frameworks and processes for effective oversight of the insurance sector.
  • Contribute to solvency-related policy work and provide actuarial input to wider Financial Stability Group initiatives.
  • Help identify, develop and deliver thematic reviews, particularly where actuarial expertise adds value.
  • Engage with licensed insurers, appointed actuaries, industry bodies and domestic and international regulatory agencies.
  • Build confidence in the insurance regime through strong internal and external advocacy and high-quality technical advice.
  • Develop and mentor junior colleagues and share actuarial knowledge and capability across the organisation.

  

Ō pūkenga – About you   

To be successful in this role you will bring:  

  • Strong academic or professional qualifications in actuarial science, or a related field such as mathematics, statistics or financial theory, including membership of a professional actuarial organisation.
  • Post-qualification experience in actuarial work.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills, creative thinking, sound judgement and the ability to consider issues holistically.
  • The ability to design and implement strategies that achieve required decisions and actions.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and a strong track record of building and maintaining effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working as a senior member of a team and providing guidance and mentoring to junior colleagues, including supporting their personal and career development.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • A collaborative, positive and enthusiastic approach.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of NZ National Security Clearance.

The anticipated salary for this role is up to $230,725 (actual salary will be dependent on your skills and experience).
