Job Description

This position analyzes daily profit and loss activity, prepares financial estimates, resolves discrepancies, and ensures the accuracy of contract data for the NAM Grains and Oilseeds and Coffee Divisions of Louis Dreyfus Company. This position serves as a point of contact for any questions on daily profit and loss.

 

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions

  • Reviews the daily profit and loss (P&L) reports and ensures the accuracy of daily reported P&L.
  • Routinely validates with supporting documentation the market prices used to value positions. 
  • Independently reconciles complicated discrepancies related to contracts, scheduling and invoicing; collaborates with Logistics and Execution personnel to resolve any problems/issues that may affect the daily P&L.
  • Responds to questions from trading and platform personnel related to movements in the P&L data; researches and explains causes of discrepancies between actual P&L movements and P&L movements that are anticipated by the traders.
  • Prepares the consolidated North American daily management reports, using data received from other locations, along with the Wilton, CT data, including commentary on material P&L items.
  • Consolidates the North American regional daily PnL from the other locations for reporting.
  • Prepares and explains monthly variances between estimates and actual monthly results.
  • Prepare the monthly and quarterly gross margin commentary.
  • Back up the evening reporting of the North American Grains and Oilseeds and Coffee daily pnl to the global team using reporting software
  • Serves as a point of contact for accounting/trading system issues; maintains various reference tables; arranges profit centers for new trade desks and commodities.
  • Addresses special requests/projects, such as performing additional analyses of financial data and preparing ad-hoc reports.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist Controller in special projects and tasks for new process and/or system implementation.  
  • Assist in the annual audit and semi-annual review activities of external auditors (and internal auditors when applicable)
  • Perform the Estimated vs Actuals Gross Margin analysis for month end close
  • Back up the monthly close process for open contracts to market and open freight contracts reporting, reconciliation, and intercompany declarations.

Qualifications

Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses

The following is the required qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related discipline (e.g., Finance, Economics, Business Administration.) 

 

Experience

The following is the required qualification:

  • two to five years (plus) of experience with the analysis of accounting or financial data.

The following is the preferred qualification:

  • Experience analyzing profit and loss data within a commodity trading firm or a financial services business.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (including any physical demands)

The following are the required qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of trading systems and how the data relates to an Accounting Department
  • Solid understanding of market valuation
  • Solid understanding of trading concepts, including physical and financial transactions
  • Advanced proficiency with MS Excel
  • Strong analytical skills, and the ability to perform independent analysis with strict attention to detail
  • Strong problem solving and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet strict daily and monthly deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and propose solutions to resolve issues

 

The following is the preferred qualification:

  • Advanced proficiency with MS Excel pivot tables,look ups and filters
