About the Role
We’re partnering with a mission-driven organization seeking a Senior Accountant (CPA) to own governmental fund accounting, grant compliance, and timely financial reporting. This is a high-impact role working closely with finance leadership, accounting teammates, and program leaders to ensure strong internal controls, clean closes, and audit readiness, while supporting budgets, cash management, and continuous process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Accounting & Reporting
Lead monthly and year-end close processes and prepare accurate financial statements (entity-wide and by fund/program)
Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, journal entries, reconciliations, and variance analyses
Reconcile bank, investment, and clearing accounts; monitor cash flow and prepare forecasts
- Prepare budget-to-actual reports and assist with budget development, amendments, and transfers
Administer and monitor federal, state, and other grant programs
Manage grant drawdowns, reimbursements, allowable cost determinations, time and effort allocations, and matching requirements
Prepare and maintain the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards (SEFA)
Support Single Audit readiness under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200)
Prepare accurate and timely financial reports for funding agencies
- Ensure compliance with procurement, contracting, and record retention requirements
Oversee payroll accounting, reconciliations, and labor allocations
Coordinate with HR while maintaining appropriate segregation of duties
Review Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable processes, vendor compliance, and payment cycles
Manage fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, capitalization policies, and inventory controls
Oversee sales/use tax, property tax, and other required filings as applicable
Internal Controls, Audit & Year-End
Evaluate, document, and improve internal control procedures
Maintain and update financial policies and procedures
Serve as primary point of contact for external auditors
Prepare PBC schedules, workpapers, accruals, and year-end documentation
Address audit findings and implement corrective action plans
- Support implementation of applicable GASB standards
Administer or support MIP Fund Accounting or comparable governmental accounting systems
Support Paylocity or comparable payroll platforms
Develop standard and ad hoc reports and dashboards for leadership and program teams
- Partner with IT on system controls, backups, and financial data security
Work collaboratively with the Lead Accountant and accounting staff
Provide professional guidance, training, and mentorship as assigned
Partner with Program Directors and Project Managers on financial planning and compliance
- Present financial information to Tribal leadership and Tribal Council as requested
- Bachelor's in accounting/finance (master’s preferred)
- Active, unencumbered CPA (any U.S. jurisdiction); ability to obtain CA reciprocity within 12 months if needed
- 5+ years progressive accounting experience including governmental fund accounting + grants management
- Strong knowledge of GAAP/GASB (government) and Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200)
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups) and strong Microsoft 365 proficiency
- Experience with accounting systems (e.g., MIP Fund Accounting) and payroll systems (e.g., Paylocity)
- Strong close discipline, internal controls mindset, and executive-level communication
- Experience supporting tribal governments or similar public-sector/government environments
- Experience leading/mentoring staff in a multi-fund setting
- Must pass pre-employment drug test and background check; bondable for handling funds (credit check may be required per policy/law)
- Valid driver’s license and insurable under employer’s vehicle insurance
- Occasional evenings/weekends and travel for trainings/audits

- Salary: $95,000 – $105,000 DOE/DOQ
