Members of Scientific Operations (SciOps) are responsible for providing the on-site technical (hardware & software) support required to ensure timely execution of experiments run within the lab. It’s an intellectually challenging role, requiring dynamic problem-solving skills, combining scientific knowledge, troubleshooting prowess, and a willingness to engage with problems at all levels. A successful member of this team will become familiar with all experiments offered at Emerald, getting to know the software and hardware used to carry out experiments in the cloud lab.
SciOps are continually driving to improve the productivity and reliability of the lab. They are the "boots on the ground" who recognize and fix code bugs, instrument software and set-up errors while also identifying systemic inefficiencies. As a SciOp you work extensively with other teams to improve the quality of the cloud lab.
Every scientist at Emerald learns to code, working in the Wolfram Language. Members of the SciOps team require a deep understanding of the code at the interface between customers and the physical laboratory. Traditionally, they train with the Scientific Development team before advancing to Sci Ops.
About You
We are seeking team members who are excited to reshape how scientific research is done, and who are willing to learn new things and solve the technical challenges that are necessary to make this happen.
You might be a great fit for Scientific Operations at ECL if ...
- You have 5+ years of experience working in a GxP or Life Sciences environment.
- You have experience applying systemic troubleshooting methodologies to complex technical problems.
- You are able to work fixed, but non-traditional hours. A specific night role is also available.
- You are a data driven individual with statistical analysis experience.
- You are capable and willing to learn computer programming (no prior experience necessary, but it is a welcome bonus).
- You have worked extensively in the course of research to troubleshoot both experiments and complex experimentation.
- You have experience conducting a wide variety of different experiment types and are excited to quickly develop expertise in a very diverse array of new methods and instrumentation.
- You enjoy building systems and automating processes.
- You are a detail-oriented thinker who takes pride in precision and experimentation.
As a Scientific Operations team member, you would ...
- Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address challenges encountered during experiment execution (software and instrumentation)
- Identify and resolve code bugs, software glitches, and equipment setup errors promptly and effectively.
- Collaborate extensively with Scientific Development and Laboratory Operations team to enhance the overall quality and performance of the cloud lab, fostering effective cross-functional teamwork.
- Continuously develop and maintain a deep understanding of the Wolfram Language and its application in interfacing between customers and the physical laboratory.
- Gain expertise in all experiments and instruments offered by Emerald, including familiarity with the associated software and hardware used in lab experiments.
You might resonate with the culture at ECL if…
- You are passionate about science, technology, and medicine.
- You are impressively empathetic. You can argue the rationale you disagree with as convincingly as the one you agree with.
- You are intellectually fearless. Stretching yourself well out of your comfort zone across multiple disciplines is more the rule than the exception at Emerald.
- You are curious. When first-principles reasoning illuminates a path that diverges from the standard assumptions, you feel compelled to see where it leads.
- You have a keen interest in developing unique skills in an unconventional setting that traditional laboratories cannot provide.
About ECL
www.emeraldcloudlab.com
The Emerald Cloud Laboratory (ECL) enables life scientists to move out of the lab, and to conduct research entirely from a computer. Stepping away from manual completion of experiments at the bench, scientists on the ECL leverage the remote, automated execution of all standard biology and chemistry experiments in Emerald’s industrial lab facilities, working within a software platform for all stages of research workflows, from experimental design to data analysis.

What We Do
Emerald Cloud Lab is a remote controlled life science laboratory that allows scientists to conduct their experiments without being anchored to a physical lab. In our cloud lab, experiments are driven by issuing commands over the internet, which are then run in a vast, highly automated central facility which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In the ECL, you have full control over how your experiments are conducted.
