The impact you will make

As a Scientific Electronics Engineer, you will play a key role in bridging hardware and software for experimental setups. You will design, develop and integrate low-voltage electronics, microcontrollers and FPGA systems into complex experiments, while creating GUIs and software tools to control and monitor them. Working with Tango Controls, Taranta or similar frameworks, you will ensure seamless communication between devices and software.

Your responsibilities
  • Collaborate closely with Scientists and Engineers to design, develop and implement experimental equipment and setups
  • Program and develop user interfaces (GUIs) using PyQt or similar frameworks to control experimental devices and systems
  • Integrate microcontrollers, FPGA boards and low-voltage electronics into software systems for experimental setups
  • Work with Tango Controls, Taranta or similar control frameworks to interface hardware with software
  • Monitor, analyze and process TTL signals for triggering cameras and other devices, including noise reduction and signal integrity verification
  • Work with sensors, instrumentation and data acquisition systems to ensure reliable and accurate signal transmission and timing
  • Assemble, install and commission electronics and software systems for data acquisition and control onsite
  • Write clear and detailed documentation including software specifications, deployment instructions, troubleshooting guides and signal processing reports
  • Contribute to the Engineering Quality Management System by creating procedural documentation and establishing engineering best practices
  • Provide hands-on support to the science team during setup phases and experimental campaigns
What you bring
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field (e.g., Electronics, Mechatronics, Control Systems)
  • Practical experience with low-voltage electronics, microcontrollers, FPGA and embedded systems.
  • Knowledge of PCB design tools such as KiCad, Eagle or Altium Designer, including schematic capture, PCB layout and design for manufacturing considerations
  • Strong software skills in Python (including OOP) and experience developing GUIs with PyQt or similar tools
  • Experience with Tango Controls, Taranta or similar scientific control frameworks
  • Familiarity with electrical documentation tools such as EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical or similar
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams and harness drawings
  • Knowledge and practical application of IEC standards commonly used in Germany for low-voltage systems, including: IEC 61131, IEC 61010, IEC 61508 / 61511
  • Experience with version control systems (Git, Azure DevOps, etc.) and collaborative software development
  • Excellent communication skills, structured working style and strong problem-solving ability
  • Flexibility, adaptability and willingness to travel to national and international laboratories
  • Previous experience in scientific facilities (laser, optics, nuclear or high-tech industries)
What sets you apart
  • Fluent in German is a plus, but not mandatory
  • Knowledge of PLCs or multi-axis stepper motor controllers
  • Understanding of laser, optics or nuclear physics principles
  • Experience with CAD/ PDM systems (Inventor, Vault, or similar)

Skills Required
