Job Description

Overall Purpose of Job:

SAP Cloud Platforms Architect designs, implements, and stabilizes enterprise cloud platform capabilities across SAP Business Technology Platform and SAP Business Data Cloud. In the current team stage, this is a hands-on architect role that combines platform design, technical delivery, operational ownership, and stakeholder enablement in close partnership with the Lead Architect.

Main tasks, roles and responsibilities:

•   Define and evolve the target architecture and roadmap for SAP BTP and SAP Business Data Cloud, including platform capabilities, runtime choices, reusable patterns, and standards for extension, integration, automation, data, and AI.

•   Establish and maintain the cloud operating model for accounts and tenants, including global accounts, directories, subaccounts, entitlements, quotas, budgets, regional placement, and SAP Business Data Cloud formations/provisioning.

•   Design and implement foundational platform services such as identity and trust, role collections, user provisioning, secure access patterns, and lifecycle administration for cloud users and applications.

•   Establish automation and delivery mechanisms using the SAP BTP CLI, infrastructure-as-code where appropriate, and SAP Continuous Integration and Delivery pipelines.

•   Lead hands-on implementation of new platform capabilities, pilot scenarios, and proof-of-concepts, translating requirements into deployable and supportable cloud solutions.

•   Create and document reusable reference architectures for clean-core side-by-side extensions, event-driven integration, secure connectivity, and data-product-oriented scenarios.

•   Operate and stabilize productive services until dedicated operational roles are added, including provisioning, configuration changes, troubleshooting, service health reviews, and runtime optimization.

•   Implement end-to-end observability with monitoring, alerting, logging, dashboards, and operational analytics using SAP Cloud ALM and relevant BTP observability services.

•   Own the technical security baseline within the team’s scope, including secure configuration, auditability, logging, and remediation follow-up under SAP’s shared-responsibility model.

•   Enable application teams and internal stakeholders through standards, onboarding guidance, architecture documents, runbooks, and knowledge transfer, while continuously evaluating new BTP/BDC capabilities for practical adoption

•   Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex incidents, performance issues and major changes; contribute to CAB/change governance and provide input to KPI/SLA reporting.

•   Collaborate closely with the Domain Lead IT, service owners, project teams, security, operations and enterprise architecture.

Qualifications

Experiences and requirements:

Education

•   University degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or comparable qualification.

Work experiences - time/seniority/sector

•   Extensive experience in architecture and solution design in complex, business-critical and international IT environments across applications, platforms or infrastructure.

•   Experience in defining target architectures, technical standards, architectural guidelines, roadmaps and governance models.

•   Strong hands-on experience with SAP BTP, including account/subaccount setup, service administration, and at least one major runtime such as Cloud Foundry and/or Kyma; ability to select an appropriate runtime and operating model for a use case.

•   Working knowledge of SAP Business Data Cloud and closely related data platforms such as SAP Datasphere, SAP Databricks, data products, formations, tenant provisioning, or BW modernization paths.

•   Experience with SAP Cloud Identity Services, SSO/trust configuration, role collections/authorizations, and user/group provisioning.

•   Experience with change governance, CAB processes, risk management and contribution to KPI/SLA reporting is expected.

Technical / IT knowledge

•   Strong knowledge of architecture principles, patterns, standards and modern enterprise technologies.

•   Experience with observability and productive operations, including monitoring, alerting, logging, dashboards, and incident troubleshooting.

•   Ability to write clear architecture documents, standards, and runbooks, and to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders in English.

•   Ability to perform architecture reviews, design assessments, risk evaluations and technical quality assurance.

•   Relevant certifications are a plus.

Language - with level

•   Fluent in English; German is a plus.

Required Skills and Competencies:

•   Strategic mindset combined with hands-on technical credibility and strong analytical capability.

•   Builder mentality for an early-stage team: comfortable moving between architecture, implementation, and operations before dedicated operational roles are added. This matches SAP’s CoE model, where early maturity stages combine support, delivery, and governance before scaling into more specialized roles.

•   Strong intrinsic motivation, curiosity, and self-directed learning; able to absorb new BTP/BDC capabilities quickly and apply them pragmatically. SAP job profiles explicitly emphasize staying current, rapid learning, and autodidactic skill growth in BTP roles.

•   Cost-conscious and pragmatic decision-making, with the ability to balance platform quality, delivery speed, and spend transparency. SAP’s governance guidance explicitly ties CoE success to cost optimization, standardized operations, and reduced fragmentation

•   Ability to drive alignment across international, virtual teams.

•   Problem solving skills and continuous-improvement mindset.

Reporting line and leadership scope:

•   Reports to the Domain Lead IT.

•   Provides functional and technical leadership / guidance for architects, specialists and engineers within the SAP Platforms domain.

•   Works in close alignment with enterprise architecture, security, operations, service owners and project governance.

Role impact / contribution:

The role ensures the technical integrity, scalability and maintainability of the global SAP Platforms domain by defining standards and guiding solution design. It is a key contributor to technology decisions and governance, reduces delivery and operational risks through sound architecture and best practices, and supports successful delivery of projects, changes and continuous improvements across the functional unit.
