Overall Job Function:
The Safety Specialist supports the cooperative’s safety programs by assisting with training, inspections, documentation, and regulatory compliance across agricultural operations. This position is ideal for an individual looking to build a career in workplace safety within a multi faceted agricultural cooperative who handles feed, grain, agronomy, lumber, and retail meats.
Essential Job Functions:
Assist in implementing, monitoring and maintaining safety policies, procedures, and programs across cooperative locations.
Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments at cooperative locations; document findings and recommend corrective actions.
Assist in the investigation of workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses; prepare reports and track corrective and preventive actions.
Help coordinate and deliver safety training for employees, including onboarding and refresher training.
Maintain safety records and documentation, including training records, inspection reports, and OSHA logs.
Assist with compliance efforts related to OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable safety regulations.
Support emergency preparedness activities such as drills, equipment checks, and response planning.
Serve as a resource for employees regarding safety questions, procedures, and best practices.
Participate in safety committees and contribute to continuous improvement of the cooperative’s safety culture.
Travel to cooperative locations as needed.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Agriculture, Environmental Health, or a related field preferred.
Ability to conduct inspections, analyze hazards, and recommend practical solutions.
Basic understanding of workplace safety concepts or willingness to learn regulatory requirements.
Strong communication skills and ability to work with employees at all levels.
Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office or similar).
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and ability to travel between locations.
Preferred Qualifications
Coursework or internship experience related to safety, agriculture, or agriculture operations.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain after hire).
Familiarity with agricultural operations, grain, feed, agronomy, or cooperative environments.

Work Requirements:
This position is based in a fast-paced setting with a combination of office and outside work. Office equipment utilized will be a computer, phone, fax, copy machine and other standard office equipment. Outside work will be exposed to elements, loud noise, and agricultural equipment. PPE will be provided and must be worn per FCS safety policy. Travel between FCS locations will be required. Typical hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; weekend / holiday and evening hours, as necessary.
While performing job functions the employee will be required to talk and hear most of the time. The employee will spend frequent intervals moving and sitting, while also needing to reach, bend, twist, crawl, crouch, stoop or kneel. The employee will need to be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 25 pounds frequently. The physicality of this job is medium.
