How You Will Make an Impact
The Safety Coordinator will review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors for the Organization. This position serves as the intake for emergency communications and is responsible for the coordination and monitoring of fire drills, earthquake drills, severe weather drills and for the maintenance and function of the organizations emergency communications systems. The Safety Coordinator will address the safety needs of students and staff in all school locations; work with school personnel and departments to assure the highest possible degree of safety for school sites, office facilities, employees and students.

  • Maintain school safety plans, safety program binders, disaster preparedness program, Asbestos inspection related programs, AED, CPR, Blood borne Pathogen, Epi-pen, Active shooter program, Lockdowns, Incident Management procedures, Injury and Illness Prevention Program and oversee and tracks safety meetings and trainings.
  • Advise Management on compliance with applicable Department of Education safety codes, laws, regulations and standards.
  • Conduct safety training and education programs and demonstrate the use of safety equipment and safety programs
  • Assess safety needs across school and office locations to ensure proper deployment of loss and injury prevention program of material and human resources respectively.
  • Investigate accidents to identify causes and determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future
  • Investigate the adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting, and other conditions that could affect employee health, comfort, or performance.
  • Investigate health-related complaints and inspect facilities to ensure that they comply with public health legislation and regulations.
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment, and practices, in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations, and ensure the presence of fire prevention equipment, safety equipment, and first-aid supplies.
  • Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
  • Coordinate "right-to-know" programs regarding hazardous chemicals and other substances.
  • Maintain and update emergency response plans and procedures.
  • Supply site principals and administrator material for safety meetings and trainings.
  • Assist with planning emergency response drills.
  • Administrative duties, responsibilities, and activities may be assigned or changed from time to time.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATION, ETC:

  • Knowledge of applicable Department of Education safety codes, California Education Code safety laws, regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of Cal OSHA, AHERA, Fire and Building codes and California Safe Schools initiatives
  • Strong planning, organizational, follow up skills, analytical and communication skills
  • Ability and willingness to respond to emergency calls
  • Ability to recognize priority issues and escalate accordingly
  • Ability to translate technical terms into non-technical language
  • Ability to learn new processes and procedures.
  • Self-sufficient and focus on excellent customer service

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associates Degree or 5 years of equivalent relevant experience is required; Bachelors Degree highly desired
  • Experience in Occupational, Environmental and Educational field of safety required
  • Experience in a public-school environment and knowledge of California Education Code safety regulations is highly desired
  • Formal safety training required or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation a plus
  • Valid Driver License and auto insurance are required.
  • Proficient skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

TRAVEL: Ability to travel up to 50% in performance of job duties is required


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required use of safety and protective gear
  • Adhere to safety and lifting procedures
  • Mental Demands: high workflow management, high project coordination.
  • Finger Dexterity: using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together.
  • Talking: especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Average Hearing: able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
  • Average Visual Abilities: ordinary acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or operate machinery.
  • Physical Strength: sedentary work. Sitting most of the time, and occasionally exerts up to 30 lbs. of force (almost all office jobs).
  • Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, repetitious exacting work required.
  • Working in a noisy, distracting environment with frequent deadline pressures.

Skills Required
