About The Opportunity

We are seeking a driven Robotic Systems Engineering Intern to help build, deploy, and support the automated technology powering Wonder’s restaurants. You will gain hands-on experience across the full robotic system—including mechanical hardware, electrical and controls systems, software, and system integration—while supporting multiple robot cell deployments, sustaining existing kitchen equipment, and contributing to the development of new automation initiatives currently in the conceptual phase.

The Impact You Will Make

  • Support installation, commissioning, testing, validation, and operational launch of the Automated Expo robotic order-sorting platform across multiple restaurant deployments.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and system-integration issues in both development and live restaurant environments.

  • Assist with prototyping, testing, and evaluation of new kitchen automation concepts, including researching unfamiliar technologies and helping assess potential solutions.

  • Develop and improve deployment, commissioning, troubleshooting, and operational playbooks to make automation deployments more repeatable and scalable.

  • Support sustaining engineering activities for Wonder’s back-of-house conveyance systems currently operating across nearly 150 locations, while partnering with cross-functional teams to improve reliability.

Tangible Requirements and Essential Job Duties

  • Work hands-on with robotic and electromechanical systems, including motors, sensors, actuators, conveyors, 6-axis collaborative robot arms, and associated hardware and controls.

  • Participate in integration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities at Wonder restaurant locations.

  • Execute defined testing protocols, document results, identify issues, and work with engineering team members to determine appropriate solutions.

  • Read and interpret technical documentation, component datasheets, mechanical drawings, electrical diagrams, and system-level documentation as needed.

  • Use engineering judgment and structured problem-solving to investigate technical issues and help drive them through resolution.

  • Collaborate with third-party vendors and internal engineering teams as needed to source components, troubleshoot equipment, and support system development.

Initial Focus and Key Deliverables (Post-Joining)

  • Develop a strong understanding of the Automated Expo platform and its mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and operational interfaces.

  • Support successful installation, commissioning, validation, and operational handoff of Automated Expo deployments.

  • Build and maintain deployment and operational playbooks that improve consistency, troubleshooting, and scalability.

  • Develop hands-on familiarity with Wonder’s existing kitchen conveyance systems and contribute to sustaining engineering and reliability improvements across the installed base.

  • Support research, prototyping, testing, and early-stage development of new kitchen automation concepts.

Core Responsibilities

  • Robotics & Automation: Support the development, deployment, and operation of robotic and automated food-service systems.

  • Systems Integration: Work across mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and operational interfaces to help integrate and troubleshoot complete systems.

  • Sustaining Engineering: Support troubleshooting and reliability improvements for automation systems operating in Wonder restaurants.

  • New Automation Development: Contribute to research, prototyping, testing, and evaluation of emerging kitchen automation concepts.

  • Deployment & Operational Readiness: Help prepare robotic systems for successful deployment and transition into reliable restaurant operations.

  • Documentation & Scalability: Create and improve technical, deployment, and operational documentation to support repeatable execution.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related engineering field

  • At least 2 years of relevant hands-on experience through internships, academic projects, robotics teams, maker projects, or other practical engineering experience.

  • Demonstrated hands-on aptitude and enthusiasm for working with robotic, electromechanical, or automated systems.

  • Foundational understanding of mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, or related engineering principles.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate unfamiliar technical problems and develop practical solutions.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, electrical diagrams, technical documentation, and component datasheets.

  • Experience with CAD, prototyping tools, low-voltage electrical wiring, basic programming, instrumentation, controls, or other engineering apparatus through coursework or hands-on projects.

  • Strong communication, organization, and documentation skills, with a willingness to work collaboratively across engineering, restaurant operations, and vendor teams.
