As an On-Call Registered Nurse, you’ll provide compassionate, responsive nursing support to patients and families when they need it most. Working as an important member of our On-Call Team, you’ll help patients and caregivers throughout Big Bend Hospice’s eight-county service area navigate changes in condition, manage symptoms, and receive comfort and support throughout the end-of-life journey.

This is a full-time RN position designed for an experienced, confident nurse who is comfortable working independently, responding to changing patient needs, and collaborating with our interdisciplinary hospice team. You’ll provide clinical guidance, education, symptom management, and hands-on nursing care while helping patients and families feel supported and cared for after regular business hours.

📅 Schedule: 7 days on / 7 days off
🌙 Weekday After-Hours On-Call: Monday through Thursday, 5:00 PM–8:00 AM

👥 Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provides supervision and clinical direction to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Hospice Aides as needed.

🩺 Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provides quality patient care and manages direct care for patients and families as part of the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT), incorporating appropriate nursing interventions and follow-up. Participates in providing 24-hour/day, 7-day/week patient care, including on-call rotation coverage as needed.*

  • Provides compassionate palliative nursing care to patients and families using appropriate nursing interventions that incorporate physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs consistent with the established patient/family plan of care developed by the IDT.*

  • Revises and updates the patient/family plan of care in response to changing needs, collaborating with other members of the IDT to determine appropriate covered services consistent with the patient and family’s goals of care.*

  • Completes all clinical documentation accurately and in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act, hospice nursing standards, licensing and regulatory requirements, and organizational policies and procedures, completing documentation at the point of care as appropriate.*

  • Communicates effectively and compassionately with patients, families, physicians, vendors, pharmacies, facility staff, and other members of the care team to support seamless coordination of patient care.*

  • Demonstrates strong clinical skills in case management, BBH policies and procedures, intravenous therapy, pain medication titration, symptom management, and patient/family relationships.*

  • Demonstrates competence across a variety of hospice visit types and care situations, including on-call visits, death events, continuation of Continuous Home Care, admissions, discharges, transfers, triage revocations, and General Inpatient (GIP) care.*

  • Provides and reinforces patient and family/caregiver education designed to increase confidence, comfort, and independence in providing care and support.*

  • Travels throughout the service area and provides patient care in adjacent counties as situations warrant.*

  • Performs other duties as requested.*

🎓 Education & Experience
  • Current and valid Florida Registered Nurse (RN) license required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) required.

  • Minimum of three years of nursing experience, preferably in hospice or home health.

  • Hospice or palliative care experience required.

  • Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN) certification preferred.

💪 Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to safely perform the physical and travel-related responsibilities associated with providing patient care in a variety of settings.

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods while completing documentation and working on a computer.

  • Ability to lift up to 15 pounds as needed.

  • Ability to access and safely navigate various departments and areas within organizational facilities.

  • Ability to travel to patient homes, facilities, and other care locations throughout the assigned service area.

Skills Required

  • Current Florida Registered Nurse licensure
