GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Coordinates the administrative and clinical activities for the nursing department for a designated shift.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports and demonstrates practice consistent with the mission, philosophy, standards, policies and procedures of St. Luke Health Services.
  • Must possess a positive attitude and the ability to deal with staff, residents, family members, visitors and the general public in a professional manner.
  • In the absence of the Director/Assistant Director of Nursing, evaluates and directs the resident care.
  • Assumes the duties of charge/medication/treatment nurse in emergency situations.
  • May discipline staff after consultation with Nurse Manager/ ADON/DON regarding disciplinary action.
  • Gives concise, accurate, qualitative report from your shift to the oncoming supervisor.
  • Ensures that all nursing service personnel are following their respective job descriptions.
  • Performs administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary.
  • Participates in the development, maintenance and implementation of St. Luke’s quality assurance program.
  • Makes frequent rounds on all nursing units to insure that all nursing personnel are performing their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
  • Maintains CONFIDENTIALITY of all resident care information.
  • Keeps Director of Nursing or other administrative officer informed of activities and problems.
  • Monitors nursing care to assure that all residents are treated fairly, and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Supervises implementation of the Resident’s Care Plan and Resident Care Records.
  • Keeps aware of and evaluates changes in condition of the residents and informs the physician and families of any changes.
  • Assists in the in-service training of all nursing personnel.
  • Completes performance evaluations on personnel as required and reviews these with the appropriate personnel.
  • Assesses all problems as they arise, visits residents and implements changes in care plan and makes arrangements for all resident emergency transportation.
  • Interprets principles of good health care management to St. Luke staff.
  • Attends in-service programs and administrative meetings as required.
  • In case of resident’s death, makes arrangements for and supervises removal by the funeral director of choice with proper documentation of such.
  • Accesses computer to obtain admission, discharge and CareTracker information.
  • Makes independent decisions regarding nursing care.
  • Examines and gives emergency treatment to residents and first aide treatment to visitors or staff involved in accidents in the facility. Notifies the Medical Department regarding resident emergencies and completes incident reports and all necessary documentation.
  • Investigates and handles resident and personnel problems, consults with and notifies appropriate Department Heads of these concerns as needed.
  • Makes staff assignment for the next shift and readjusts the shift assignment as necessary following collective bargaining contract language.
  • Monitors and assists the residents in the dining room for meals.
  • Makes sure physician orders are carried out accurately.
  • Performs assignments as directed by the Administrator, Director/Assistant Director of Nursing.
  • Takes all calls from staff not coming in to work and arranges for coverage for nursing staff. Completes all required documentation and notifies the appropriate Department Heads of call-ins for their departments.
  • Night supervisor makes rounds of entire building including dining room, kitchen, basement and all units. Checks all doors, making sure they are locked. Checks alarm system to ensure that it is activated. Completes “Door Check List Form” nightly.
  • Enforces St. Luke’s policies and rules fairly to all personnel.
  • Must be available to periodically work more than eight (8) hours per day, or more than forty (40) hours per week.
  • Other related duties that may have become necessary or as directed by the supervisor, department head and/or administration.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate of an approved school of Nursing.

Current registration in the State of New York. Current RN licensure required.

At least 3 years of clinical and managerial experience in a long term care facility preferred.
