Our Risk Solutions team is currently seeking a Commercial Auto Technical Manager in our Worcester, MA location. Position is eligible for a fully remote arrangement. This is a full-time, exempt role.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Risk Solutions Technical Manager - Commercial Auto supports the Risk Solutions field, Technical Services team, Corporate Underwriting, Claims, and commercial business partners. The role provides technical leadership for commercial auto and fleet-related risk assessment and consultative services across a range of vehicle types, fleet sizes, operating models, industries, and regulatory environments. The Technical Manager advances disciplined risk selection, effective risk improvement, field capability, and consistent survey and report quality, with emphasis on driver management, fleet safety systems, crash reduction, vehicle maintenance, regulatory compliance, and the effective use of telematics and other vehicle safety technologies.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Corporate Underwriting and Technical Team Support: Partner with Corporate Underwriting, Technical Directors, Claims, Industry Leadership, and business partners to evaluate commercial auto exposures and controls; contribute to new and existing class-of-business strategies; and provide technical consultation on complex, high-hazard, or emerging fleet risks.
  • Risk Solutions Field Training and Technical Support: Lead and support commercial auto technical skill development for Risk Solutions field consultants through training, coaching, co-travel, account consultation, quality review, case studies, and practical field tools.
  • Strategic Project Initiatives: Work closely with the Technical Director team and Corporate Underwriting on projects that strengthen commercial auto risk selection, service strategy, technical guidance, best practices, data use, and response to emerging loss trends.
  • Account Survey and Service: Support field execution through technical account consultation and quality reviews. Travel, when appropriate, to lead or assist with complex or high-risk fleet surveys, customer consultations, and stewardship activities.
  • Technical Standards and Governance: Develop, maintain, and promote consistent commercial auto assessment standards, service practices, recommendation guidance, documentation expectations, and quality controls that support defensible and actionable work products.
Key Job Duties
  • Collaborate with Industry Leadership, Corporate Line of Business Underwriting, Claims, Field Operations Leaders, underwriters, Risk Solutions service managers, agents, and customers on commercial auto risk issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Monitor commercial auto loss drivers, emerging exposures, regulatory developments, and industry practices; translate findings into field guidance, training, tools, and action plans.
  • Provide advanced technical consultation on driver qualification and selection, motor vehicle record standards, driver onboarding and training, distracted-driving controls, seat-belt use, fatigue management, routing and scheduling, vehicle use policies, and management accountability.
  • Evaluate fleet safety management systems, including crash reporting and investigation, preventability determination, post-crash coaching, trend analysis, corrective action, and measurement of program effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance on vehicle selection, inspection, preventive maintenance, defect reporting, load securement, towing, specialized vehicle operations, and applicable commercial motor vehicle requirements.
  • Maintain working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, DOT and FMCSA expectations, and state or local requirements relevant to the fleets and operations being evaluated.
  • Advance effective use of telematics, in-cab and outward-facing camera systems, driver monitoring, advanced driver-assistance systems, GPS and routing tools, and other fleet technologies. Emphasize documented management review, coaching, accountability, and measurable risk improvement rather than technology adoption alone.
  • Collaborate with Field Operations Leaders and Technical Directors to identify skill gaps, establish development priorities, and strengthen field capability for commercial auto risk assessment and consultative service.
  • Collaborate with Risk Solutions field staff through co-travel, account consultation, quality reviews, mentoring, and technical trainings to support development and consistent survey and report standards.
  • Develop and maintain internal technical resources, including training modules, owner manuals, best-practice guidelines, survey aids, recommendation language, and technical reference materials, as well as appropriate customer-facing resources.
  • Partner on innovative solutions and vendor relationships that support collision reduction, driver behavior improvement, fleet maintenance, claim defensibility, and operational efficiency; assist with implementation and field execution.
  • Support and promote Risk Solutions commercial auto services and capabilities with customers, agents, underwriting partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Attend industry conferences, professional development programs, technical seminars, and webinars to maintain expertise and awareness of fleet safety and commercial auto trends.
Key Measures of Success
  • Quality, consistency, defensibility, and business impact of technical work products.
  • Effective partnership with Risk Solutions Field Operations, Technical Directors, Industry Leadership, Underwriting, Claims, agents, and customers.
  • Development and adoption of innovative commercial auto tools, technical resources, guidance, and training.
  • Measurable improvement in field capability, account consultation, survey quality, and report quality.
  • Positive project-management outcomes, including timely delivery, stakeholder alignment, and effective implementation.
  • Practical innovation that improves risk insight, collision-reduction efforts, quality, or operational efficiency.
  • Timeliness, responsiveness, productivity, and sound prioritization across multiple assignments.
Required Skills, Experience and Competencies
  • At least 10 years of Risk Solutions, loss control, fleet safety, transportation safety, or related commercial insurance experience, including significant field-based risk assessment and consultative service experience with a national or regional commercial lines carrier, fleet operator, or comparable organization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in commercial auto exposures and controls, including fleet safety program evaluation, driver qualification, MVR standards, driver training and supervision, loss and root cause analysis, vehicle inspection and maintenance, and management accountability.
  • Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA requirements and their application to commercial motor vehicle operations; ability to distinguish regulated fleet requirements from broader fleet safety best practices.
  • Experience evaluating fleet and loss data and translating findings into clear risk insights, customer recommendations, underwriting support, field guidance, and action plans.
  • Knowledge of telematics, camera systems, driver monitoring, ADAS, and other vehicle technologies, including how data should be used for driver coaching, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Professional designation or certification preferred, such as CSP, ASP, ARM, CPCU, CDS, TRIP or equivalent transportation/fleet safety credential.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred in occupational safety, risk management, transportation, engineering, business, insurance, or a related field.
  • Motivated self-starter with demonstrated initiative and the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Strong to exceptional written, verbal, facilitation, presentation, and consultative communication skills, including the ability to influence technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
