Summary: The applicant will join the Scalabrino Lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin Eye Institute. The research explores how various blinding diseases change neuronal function of the retina, the light sensitive tissue in the back of the eye. The laboratory uses a variety of techniques to answer this question, including molecular biology (cloning, PCR, mammalian cell culture, qPCR, RNA-sequencing), genetics (recombinant viral vectors- AAV, mouse breeding), imaging (histology, confocal microscopy, fundoscopy, OCT) electrophysiology (ex vivo multi electrode array recordings). The applicant will be responsible for mouse husbandry, assisting the PI and others in the lab, and generating data on an independent project related to vision loss. The Scalabrino Lab is dedicated to
inclusive mentorship and training. If you have a bachelor’s degree in any area of the natural sciences, math, engineering or computer science, and you want to perform research in a supportive and dynamic environment, please apply.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Data acquisition for imaging, electrophysiology, behavior, viral production and/or RNA-sequencing.
2. Analysis of large datasets from electrophysiology recordings, retinal transcriptomes, and behavior tests.
3. Record and compile accurate records and communicate summaries of experimental results.
4. Participate in meetings with principal investigator and other lab members
5. Assist in building electrophysiology rig and behavior arena.
6. Carry out routine laboratory duties, which could include the washing and sterilizing of glassware and equipment, disposal of laboratory waste, ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies, and coordinating shipping of materials to and from research collaborators, and ocular injections.
7. Perform small laboratory research projects as needed under the supervision of the principal investigator, students or research staff.
8. Complete all necessary formal training requirements (e.g. health and safety training) promptly.
9. Maintenance of mouse colony (breeding, genotyping, general husbandry)
