We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, creating a community where colleagues feel respected and valued. We aim to reflect the diversity of our students and communities, and to strengthen our university through collaboration and diverse perspectives, across all roles at the University.

We are seeking a self-motivated and experienced research assistant to join the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research (CAMHR) at the University of Hull on a fixed term contract for 3 years. CAMHR is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Mental Health Research Group comprised of a highly experienced consortium of researchers. The successful candidate will become part of a larger interdisciplinary team of researchers investigating addiction and mental health conditions. Under the leadership of Professor Thomas Phillips, Professor of Nursing in Addiction and Professor Judith Cohen, Director of Hull Health Trials Unit, the research team has secured a five-year award, supported by partners at the University of York and King’s College London, to develop addiction and mental health research based at the University of Hull.

Working closely with health and social care providers, patients and the public, we have developed an ambitious programme of research across three themes. This post will predominantly provide support to Theme 3, with flexible support to the other Themes as required. Theme 3 will define the needs of those experiencing alcohol-related cognitive impairment (ARCI).

The core research project within theme 3 involves recruiting participants from acute hospital settings and following participants up over two time points in the community. The postholder will work closely with the Senior Research Fellow, Research Assistant and wider Theme 3 Team to ensure that this large project is delivered on time and to target.

The postholder will work with clinical teams within the hospital to identify and approach patients with an alcohol use disorder, describe the study to patients and take informed consent. They will collect data, including validated measures relating to cognition, alcohol consumption, alcohol problems, physical and mental health, quality of life and service use. The postholder will coordinate follow-up appointments and travel to meet with participants in a range of community settings to collect data, including a computerised neuropsychological battery. Data collection will take place across Hull and East Riding initially, with the possibility of moving to other sites in Yorkshire and the Humber.

The postholder will meet regularly with the wider team and contribute to regulatory approvals and modifications, monitoring, governance processes and report writing.

The postholder may also support the Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement Coordinators to develop and deliver stakeholder networks and lived experience advisory groups.

The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, knowledge, skills and experience in delivering clinical research and experience engaging with vulnerable people in clinical/research settings.

This role will be based in both hospital and community settings, with most work conducted outside of the office environment and with significant travel across community settings in the local area. Therefore, due to the amount of travel required, the candidate will ideally have a valid driver’s licence and access to a car.
