As a Reliability Engineer at DTNA, you will lead investigations into emerging and systemic product issues, applying strong analytical and technical expertise to determine root causes and drive effective corrective actions. You’ll collaborate closely with various disciplines including Quality, Engineering, Supplier Management, Compliance, Field Staff and Aftersales functions to resolve complex base engine problems impacting our products in the field. In this role, you’ll analyze product performance data, guide troubleshooting efforts, initiate and coordinate field actions, and prepare materials for quality and safety review committees. You will also help shape the reliability and serviceability of future products by providing technical input during development. You’ll leverage your background, Detroit Powertrain product knowledge, and leadership skills to amplify the voice of the customer within the organization to support customer uptime and product quality. Exceptional candidates will also bring experience with cross functional leadership, continuous improvement practices, and challenging traditional thinking.

What You Drive at DTNA

  • Analyze and investigate root cause of product failures through failure analysis and troubleshooting while guiding customers on correct repair procedures.
  • Investigate new and existing emerging product issues and prioritize/re-prioritize work as needed.
  • Use all statistical applications to analyze product issue data and detail from field service staff to determine scope and severity of new problems.
  • Initiate meetings and coordinate investigations with cross-functional teams to determine / gain understanding of product issues. 
  • Drive issues and ensure assignment for corrective action through the FQT (Field Quality Team), Change Management, Engineering Release, and Production process(s). 
  • Collaborate with engineering / component suppliers to understand problems and develop solutions.
  • Initiate field action as appropriate through publications such as: Service Solution, Technical Service Bulletin, Campaign, Recall, or Customer Advisory letter. 
  • Communicate immediate field action to dealer techs using DTNA Solutions. 
  • Write Literature requests to TechComm team for bulletins, and technical manual changes.
  • Stay current on technological and product developments in areas of responsibility.·        
  • Analyze financial benefits to determine whether field campaigns or bulletins are appropriate.
  • Prepare information to be used in the Product Problem Evaluation Committee (PPEC) approval committee.
  • Technical expert support to Engineering Compliance team on Safety / Recall issues.
  • Provide input as necessary to Engineering product development teams during the design phase of new products to ensure serviceability and reliability.
  • Provide technical support to Field Staff, Field Sales Engineering, Daimler Truck Technical Support (DTTS), TechMod, and others as needed.
  • Direct travel of self in coordination with field service staff, customers, and internal business partners to troubleshoot and diagnose product problems.
  • This position will have specific responsibility to address base engine (FQT 1) and oil/coolant/fluid (FQT 3) system product problems.  

Knowledge You Should Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of experience or 8+ years of experience in lieu of degree
  • Working knowledge and previous experience with Detroit Powertrain product operation including mechanical, electronic and software controls.
  • Uses analytical thought and skill to independently solve complex problems with minimal guidance, identify solutions and drive production/field resolution.
  • Provide updates and act as an advisor to management and key external stakeholders on job field related projects.
  • Acts as a resource and guide for colleagues with less experience.
  • Experience to contribute to standards in which others will operate.
  • Knowledge and experience with base engine hardware and controls. 
  • Systems include, but are not limited to cylinder block, crankshaft pistons, connecting rods, cylinder head, camshaft, gear train, oil lubrication system, cooling system and associated hardware. 
  • Vehicle-level troubleshooting for aftertreatment performance issues.
  • Familiarity of campaign, recall and emission compliance processes as it relates to Area of Responsibility (AOR). 
  • Field support for base engine performance and troubleshooting. 
  • DiagnosticLink (DL8) and diagnostic tool knowledge and experience.
  • Dealer and Customer interaction and relationship building preferred.

Exceptional Candidates Might Have

  • Experience leading cross-functional teams, department projects, or work streams within broader projects.
  • Continuous Improvement (CI) experience.
  • Experience working in QMOS, OWL, Reservoir, and JIRA.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering or related.
