Rancher Architect

Job Description

SUSE is seeking a talented and experienced Architect to join our Rancher development team. This team maintains the Rancher product, including its security, scalability, provisioning, authentication and authorization components.

Our organization within SUSE is responsible for the Rancher product suite. We build open-source software that addresses the operational and security challenges of managing cloud native platforms like Kubernetes, while providing DevOps teams with integrated tools for running containerized workloads. Our flagship product SUSE Rancher has over 100 million downloads to-date and is managing mission critical services at Fortune 500 companies and many other organizations large and small around the world.

Responsibilities:

As the Rancher Architect, you will be the driving force behind the architectural vision and roadmap for Rancher, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with customer needs, market trends, and the overall SUSE Enterprise Container Management strategy. You will lead the design and evolution of Rancher's architecture, encompassing its security, scalability, performance, and integration with other systems. This includes collaborating closely with engineering teams to translate your architectural vision into concrete implementation plans and ensure adherence to architectural principles.

Your expertise will be essential in providing technical leadership and guidance to engineering teams on architectural best practices and design patterns. Furthermore, you will collaborate with product management to define and prioritize product features from an architectural perspective, ensuring a cohesive and innovative product roadmap.

Engaging with customers and community contributors will be crucial to understand their needs and gather feedback on Rancher's architecture, allowing you to continuously refine and improve the platform. Staying at the forefront of industry trends and emerging technologies in the cloud native and Kubernetes ecosystem will be vital to your success. You will also actively contribute to the Rancher open-source community and engage with upstream projects, fostering collaboration and innovation. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor and guide less experienced team members on architectural concepts and best practices, sharing your knowledge and expertise to elevate the team's overall capabilities.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.

  • Typically 10+ years of experience in software development with at least 3+ years in an architectural role.

  • Deep understanding of cloud native technologies, Kubernetes, and container orchestration.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing complex software systems, preferably in the cloud native domain.

  • Strong understanding of architectural patterns, design principles, and best practices.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and build consensus.

  • Experience with Go programming language and Linux environments.

  • Familiarity with security best practices and authentication/authorization systems.

  • Knowledge of container technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative and fast-paced environment.

  • Passion for open source and community engagement.
