Position Summary
The Quality Engineer supports production at our RDC Coatings manufacturing site in Pittsburgh, PA. Leading quality programs, including testing, analyzing, reporting, and problem solving. Plan, control, and assure product and process quality in accordance with quality principles, acceptance sampling, and measurement systems. Provide subject matter expertise and training of the visual inspection system to the quality resources assigned to production teams.
Responsibilities
- Perform in-laboratory quality control testing including density, viscosity, color, gloss, cure response, others based on product.
- Support production with quality escalation, helping to evaluate product against existing specifications as well as help identify and correct process failures.
- Work with the rest of the quality and plant operations teams to execute incoming material inspections in a timely manner and work with existing suppliers to ensure compliance with incoming material specifications.
- Review quality inspection data (manually collected quality checks, flow line visual inspection system, secondary processing visual inspection) to identify trends of failure.
- Provide training on inspection methods to production Team Members – ensuring understanding of the inspection method, criteria, and downstream impacts of poor quality.
- Audit during execution of existing quality checks to ensure compliance with defined process and cadence.
- Work with procurement team to validate new suppliers.
- Investigate customer inquiries and complaints regarding as delivered product quality – to include production, storage, and transportation - owning any corrective action report (CAR) required.
- Engage with the new product introduction (NPI) process and product engineering team to define control plans to ensure compliance with part specifications.
- Support the development of Quality Management System (QMS) components, including document control to manage work instructions, performing audits and completing audit reports, and following up on corrective actions.
- Execute data analysis to identify and quantify correlations between process variables and quality defects.
- Utilize statistical process control (SPC) to reduce negative quality impact of known controllable variables.
- Develop and maintain process capability metrics for existing products and processes, utilizing that information to help evaluate new product or equipment designs before release to production.
Personal Attributes and Experience
- An undergraduate degree in technical discipline (or equivalent industry experience)
- 3-5 years of experience in a quality role within a coatings manufacturing or laboratory environment.
- Experience with data reporting and analytics tools (SQL Server, Power BI, Tableau, Minitab, Excel).
- Intrinsically motivated to make people and processes perform at a higher level.
- Strategic AI Utilization: Strategic application of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to drive business outcomes, enhance decision-making, and improve operational efficiency.

Work Environment
This job is primarily performed in an office environment. The noise level in the office is generally moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently interacts with individuals on the plant floor, near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the production environment is usually loud.
