Great American Insurance Group’s Public Sector Division provides customized insurance programs that meet the unique risk management needs of local, county and state governments, education organizations and special services districts, housing departments or other entities designed to serve the general public.  The targeted classes within these public entities include municipalities, public schools, community colleges and counties. We are one of the leading public entity writers in the industry with business across the U.S. and Canada. Great American offers coverage in the reinsurance and excess insurance markets through Pools, Trusts, Joint Powers Authorities, Reciprocals, Mutuals, Captives and Individual Risks in the public entity space.

The Public Sector Division is currently looking for a Claims Intern in our downtown Cincinnati office. The internship will start employment in May through the 2025 summer. The internship involves a combination of activities aimed at giving the intern a full understanding of a Great American Claims department and how it interacts with other functions within the organization. The program is a potential pathway to a career in insurance. Internships typically consist of a 10-week period over the summer.

Responsibilities:

Within the Public Sector division, interns will work on meaningful assignments and gain exposure to a variety of claims functions, including claims handling, analysis, investigation, and negotiation. To gain a broader perspective of the business, interns will have the opportunity to meet with individuals who work in the other various functions within the division and across the company.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in special projects within the claims group.

  • Claims handling assignments and shadowing within the Public Sector claims team, including initial coverage analysis, investigation, technical writing, litigation management, and resolution strategy.

  • Learning and performing functions utilizing the various claims systems, programs, and databases.

  • Various reading assignments, self-study courses, and case studies on a diverse range of topics intended to build a foundation of claims and general insurance knowledge.

  • The Intern will also participate in seminars and workshops provided by Claims College and Great American University.

Networking:

The Public Sector Claims Intern will participate in activities with other interns, employees, and leaders throughout the organization. In addition to on-the-job learning, interns also attend lunch-and-learns to further develop their business knowledge. The Public Sector Claims Intern will also participate in the organization wide Claim Intern Program, meeting regularly with claim interns across other divisions and lines of business.

Qualifications:

  • 3.5 preferred GPA, with a 3.0 minimum GPA for consideration.

  • Proven leadership skills through work experience (prior internship/co-ops are a plus), campus involvement, or extracurricular activities.

  • Superior communication, analysis, planning, and organizing skills.

  • Self-motivated, as the nature of the internship will have virtual components and may require independent work.

  • Attention to detail including experience working with spreadsheets, database management, and other information technology platforms.

  • Current students in a bachelor’s degree program in a wide range of majors are encouraged to apply, especially those majoring in Insurance & Risk Management.
