Summary of Job Function: Diagnoses and treats patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders by performing the following duties.

Qualifications

Essential Functions:

1 Performs initial and follow-up psychiatric evaluations, compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of brief physical examination.

2 Administers or requests diagnostic testing as needed and evaluates results of same, refers when appropriate to a higher level of care when abnormal results are identified.

3 Develops and implements patient management plans, records progress notes, and assists in provision of continuity of care.

4 Prescribes medications for the management of psychiatric disorders.

5 Refers patients to crisis services for further evaluation and triage when suicidal and/or homicidal ideation is revealed or other significant psychiatric problems are identified.

6 Interprets data gathered and makes decisions regarding appropriate management and treatment of patients being seen from the initial evaluation of a problem or the follow-up evaluations of a previously diagnosed and stabilized condition.

7 Initiates requests for commonly performed laboratory studies.

8 Identifies normal and abnormal findings in history, examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies.

9 Refers consumers/patients to appropriate medical services when medical concerns exceed those that can be managed in a typical outpatient visit.

10 Educates and informs patients regarding diagnosis, treatment, medication compliance, etc to support health maintenance.

11 May be required to oversee the activities of physician assistants or advanced registered nurse practitioners and assumes primary responsibility for the treatment team.

12 Coordinates care with patients other health care providers to support the patients quality of care.

13 Adheres to Prestera Centers documentation requirements, productivity standards, Code of Conduct, and Policies and Procedures.

14 Works collaboratively with Medical Staff and Center staff to establish standards of care, and ensures and monitors quality care

15 Provides crisis intervention services for patients exhibiting inappropriate or aggressive behavior or who present a danger to self or others if needed/requested.

16 Serves on Center committees and initiatives as needed, e.g. Mortality Review Committee, Privileging Committee, service improvement initiatives.

17 Attends Medical Staff meetings regularly.

18 Other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications:

1. Education, Certification/License, and/or Experience

a. Must possess an M.D. or D.O. in Medicine with specialization in psychiatry or addictions from an accredited college or university.

b. Must possess current and valid State of West Virginia Medical License and maintains certification/license.

c. Possession of a valid driver's license and/or access to a private vehicle for day-to-day job duties.

d. Must attain/maintain certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and CPR/FA during employment.

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required: Must possess knowledge of the principles and practices of medicine and psychiatry, knowledge of current theories and practices in the field of mental health, substance abuse, etc, and knowledge of medications and their effects on physical and psychological disorders. Possesses the ability to diagnose and treat mental illness in relation to physical conditions, ability to prescribe appropriate medications for the treatment of physical and psychological disorders, the ability to prepare and review diagnostic reports, and the ability to direct the work of others. Must possess the ability to read, write reports, perform basic math (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing), have good computer skills, and have good verbal and written communication skills.

Skills Required

  • Possess an M.D. or D.O. with specialization in psychiatry or addictions

  • May be required to oversee activities of physician assistants or advanced practice nurse practitioners
