Reporting to the Director of Project Management (Exhibits & Experiences), the Project Manager, Experiences will be a part of the team responsible for National Geographic Society’s $300 million renovation project of the headquarters in Washington, D.C., creating a new public experience proposed to open in 2026; as well as supporting traveling exhibits.
The Project Manager will determine timeline, budget, schedule, communications for internal teams’ and vendors to manage the creative development, fabrication + production, installation and remediation of permanent exhibits in the upcoming public experience.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Project Management (60%)

  • Manage concurrent projects with a variety of stakeholders, sets expectations, estimates scope, assigns tasks, obtains buy-in from team and leadership, oversee follow up and completion of work.

  • Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget by developing and maintaining clear and detailed project schedules and budgets that have up-to-date estimates, costs, milestones and timelines. 

  • Define scope of work, vendor acquisition and manages the awarding of contracts, vendor conformance with deliverables and coordinates submittals.

  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Communication + Collaboration (30%)

  • Liaise between stakeholder groups to ensure clarity, transparency, quality, and project progression.

  • Works with the Director of Project Management and Project Management team to identify opportunities to improve organizational efficiencies, facilitation, workflow and solutions.

  • Represent the standards of NGS as a contact for internal and external stakeholders on projects by communicating information between parties in a timely and accurate manner.

Scheduling, Reporting and Tools (10%)

  • Operate project management software systems to manage (or create when needed) work plans, timelines and budgets that drive the overall Base Camp project schedule and completion.

  • Oversee the retention of accurate records and archives of work.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Highly organized, self-starter, with superb communication, interpersonal and creative problem solving skills.

  • Experience managing complex projects, teams, vendors and schedules.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize effectively, meet deadlines, and pay close attention to detail.

  • Capacity to work independently and in teams as required.

  • Competencies such as sound business judgment, facilitation, decision making, problem solving, and team building.

  • Tools expertise in project management software: Monday.com, Airtable and/or Oracle Primavera P6 preferred.


 

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree

Minimum Years and Types of Experience

5+ years of project management experience, PMP preferred. Experience in themed entertainment, creative, or museum industries preferred.

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $76,000 - $80,000.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what’s required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
