We are seeking a detail-oriented Project Cost Accountant to support the financial management of construction and project-based operations. This role is responsible for project billing, job cost tracking, subcontractor administration, financial reporting, and maintaining accurate project accounting records from start to finish.
The ideal candidate has strong accounting experience, enjoys working with project teams, and can effectively manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Project Financial Management
- Prepare and process project invoices and customer billings.
- Review project budgets against actual job costs and monitor daily project expenses.
- Perform financial analysis to identify cost variances and support project profitability.
- Generate job cost reports and provide financial updates to project stakeholders.
- Create and maintain phase codes and other project cost tracking structures. Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Produce monthly owner billings and coordinate with project managers to ensure billing accuracy.
- Monitor outstanding accounts receivable and assist with collection activities as needed.
- Process invoices within the accounting system and maintain accurate financial records. Subcontract Administration
- Prepare subcontract agreements and related compliance documentation.
- Monitor subcontractor compliance requirements throughout each project.
- Process weekly subcontractor payment applications.
- Prepare owner and subcontractor change orders.
- Review project specifications to verify insurance and bonding requirements.
- Process certified payroll documentation for prevailing wage projects. Accounting & Reporting
- Support monthly and year-end accounting close activities.
- Assist with financial reporting and project cost analysis.
- Enter and maintain accounting data using systems such as Viewpoint/Vista.
- Communicate with vendors and subcontractors regarding invoices, payments, and financial documentation.
- Ensure accounting activities comply with established company policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Previous accounting experience is required; construction or project accounting experience is preferred.
- Strong understanding of job costing, project billing, accounts receivable, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Excel.
- Experience using Viewpoint/Vista accounting software is preferred.
- Ability to work effectively with project managers, subcontractors, vendors, and internal departments.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while working independently in a fast-paced environment.
