The Project Biomedical Engineer is responsible for the planning, coordination, integration, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover of all biomedical and medical equipment systems within the Ibom International Hospital Project. The role serves as the critical link between the Clinical Project Director, OEMs, consultants, procurement teams, contractors, and project management to ensure that all medical equipment is correctly specified, procured, delivered, installed, commissioned, and integrated into the hospital infrastructure and operational workflows.
The Project Biomedical Engineer will ensure that all biomedical systems comply with international healthcare standards, project specifications, regulatory requirements, and operational readiness objectives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Medical Equipment Planning and Coordination
• Support development and maintenance of the Medical Equipment Master Plan.
• Review and validate equipment schedules, room data sheets, and clinical briefs.
• Coordinate equipment requirements with end users, consultants, and clinical stakeholders.
• Ensure all equipment specifications align with approved room requirements and operational needs.
• Assist in equipment standardization and value engineering initiatives where appropriate.
2. Design Review and Infrastructure Integration
• Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings to ensure compatibility with
biomedical equipment requirements.
• Verify infrastructure readiness including: Medical gas systems, Electrical power
requirements, UPS systems, HVAC requirements, Radiation protection requirements,
Data and communication systems, Structural supports and floor loading requirements.
• Coordinate equipment interface requirements with design consultants and
contractors.
• Identify and resolve equipment-related design conflicts and constructability issues.
3. Procurement and Technical Evaluation
• Support preparation and review of technical specifications for procurement activities.
• Participate in technical evaluations of vendor submissions and equipment proposals.
• Review compliance of proposed equipment against project specifications.
• Assist procurement teams during OEM negotiations and technical clarifications.
• Support factory acceptance reviews where required.
4. Vendor and OEM Management
• Coordinate directly with OEMs and equipment suppliers including: Siemens, GE
Healthcare, Philips, Mindray and other specialist healthcare vendors.
• Monitor manufacturing, delivery, installation, and commissioning schedules.
• Ensure OEM compliance with project requirements and delivery milestones.
• Coordinate vendor site visits and installation activities.
5. Equipment Delivery, Installation and Commissioning
• Monitor equipment logistics, delivery schedules, and site readiness.
• Verify delivered equipment against approved specifications and procurement
documents.
• Coordinate installation activities with contractors and OEM representatives.
• Witness testing, calibration, commissioning, and validation activities.
• Ensure all installations are completed in accordance with manufacturer
recommendations and international standards.
• Coordinate snagging and defect rectification activities.
6. Clinical Commissioning and Operational Readiness
• Support development and execution of commissioning plans.
• Participate in room-by-room readiness assessments.
• Coordinate functional testing of biomedical equipment systems.
• Support user acceptance testing and clinical validation activities.
• Ensure all equipment is fully operational before departmental activation
7. Training and Knowledge Transfer
• Coordinate OEM-led user training programs.
• Support development of equipment operating procedures and user manuals.
• Ensure maintenance teams receive adequate technical training.
• Maintain records of training and competency assessments
8. Documentation and Asset Management
• Maintain comprehensive biomedical equipment registers.
• Ensure accurate documentation including: Technical specifications, Equipment
schedules, Test certificates, Commissioning reports, Calibration certificates, Warranty
documents, Service agreements.
• Support development of asset management and maintenance databases.
• Ensure all equipment records are complete and audit-ready.
9. Compliance and Quality Assurance
• Ensure compliance with: International healthcare standards, Manufacturer
specifications, Regulatory requirements, Project quality standards.
• Support inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews.
• Monitor closure of equipment-related NCRs and technical issues.
Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree in: Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering (with Biomedical specialization), Mechatronics Engineering or related discipline.
• Professional registration with COREN or relevant professional bodies is an advantage.
• Biomedical equipment certifications and OEM training certifications are desirable.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in: Biomedical engineering, Hospital projects,
medical equipment planning, Equipment installation and commissioning.
• Experience working on tertiary hospitals, healthcare facilities, or major healthcare
infrastructure projects is highly preferred.
• Experience with advanced healthcare systems including: Imaging equipment, Radiotherapy systems, Operating theaters.
TECHNICAL SKILLS
• Strong understanding of biomedical equipment systems and healthcare technologies.
• Knowledge of hospital planning and healthcare infrastructure integration.
• Ability to interpret: Equipment schedules, Room data sheets, Architectural drawings,
MEP drawings, technical specifications.
• Proficiency in: AutoCAD, Revit/BIM platforms, Microsoft Excel, Project Management
Software, Asset Management Systems.
• Strong reporting and documentation capability
