Location: This role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA.
Travel: Up to 10%, domestic or international
Job ID: 1642
The Role:
We are looking for a Production Support Engineer to join our Manufacturing and Production Team. As the Production Support Engineer, you’ll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.
In this role, you will serve as a critical engineering anchor for our production floor. In this role, you will not typically be behind a desk; instead, you will be on the floor daily, supporting our production technicians as they build, integrate, and test highly complex quantum computing hardware. You will be the first line of defense for any technical blockers, deviations, or process inefficiencies, ensuring our builds remain on schedule without sacrificing IonQ’s quality standards and processes.
Responsibilities:
- Provide real-time engineering support to production technicians experiencing build, assembly, or test issues.
- Investigate failures or components that do not fit/function as intended, triaging the NC process and determining disposition (rework, scrap, or MRB escalation).
- Review and update assembly documentation, SOPs, and build logs when discrepancies are found on the floor.
- Design, procure, or improve fixtures, jigs, and shop aids to make assemblies safer, faster, and more repeatable for technicians.
- Ensure the production line has the necessary calibrated tooling, specialized equipment, and technical clarity to execute builds.
- Act as the bridge between the production technicians and the core Design/Manufacturing Engineering teams, translating floor struggles into actionable design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback.
- Initiate and document Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), helping to track quality trends on the line.
- Assist in onboarding and training technicians on engineering specifications and delicate handling procedures (e.g., optics, ultra-high vacuum components, or precision cabling).
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- 2+ years of experience in a hands-on production, manufacturing, or hardware development environment.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot hardware issues on the fly in a high-tech manufacturing setting.
- Experience reading and interpreting complex engineering drawings, CAD models, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust with technicians on the floor and communicate effectively with manufacturing and design engineers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with high-precision assemblies, optomechanical builds, fiber optics, or ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems.
- A history of independently resolving hardware failures with minimal supervision.
- Experience with cleanroom environments (Class 100 to 10,000).
- Familiarity with CAD, PLM software and ERP/MRP Systems.
The approximate base salary range for this position is $99,782 - $130,641. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options found on our career site.
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available. Our benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, matching 401K, unlimited PTO and paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, and a home technology stipend. IonQ Insights
What We Do
Quantum computers are a revolutionizing technology — they have the potential to transform business, society, and the planet for the better, and IonQ is at the forefront of this revolution. After over 25 years of academic research, IonQ was founded in 2015 by Chris Monroe and Jungsang Kim with $2 million in seed funding from New Enterprise Associates, a license to core technology from the University of Maryland and Duke University, and the goal of taking trapped ion quantum computing out of the lab and into the market. In the following three years, we raised an additional $20 million from GV, Amazon Web Services, and NEA, and built two of the world’s most accurate quantum computers. In 2019, we raised another $55 million in a round led by Samsung and Mubadala, and announced partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to make our quantum computers available via the cloud. In 2020 and 2021, we built additional generations of high performance quantum hardware, added Google Cloud Marketplace to our cloud partner roster and announced a series of collaborations and business partnerships with leading academic and commercial institutions. On October 1st, 2021, IonQ began trading as IONQ on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the world's first public pure-play quantum computing company. We remain hard at work realizing the world-changing potential of quantum computing.
