Position Summary
The Production Sawyer – Circle Saw is responsible for safely operating the circle saw in a pine sawmill production environment. This is a skilled production sawyer position, not a grade-sawing position. The primary focus of this role is to maintain safe, steady production while cutting logs, cants, or lumber to the required mill specifications.

This position requires strong focus, sound judgment, mechanical awareness, and the ability to make quick, consistent production decisions. The sawyer plays a key role in mill throughput, recovery, equipment care, and overall production flow.

Essential Functions

  • Safely operate the circle saw according to company procedures and production requirements.
  • Cut logs, cants, or lumber to the correct size and specification based on mill needs.
  • Maintain steady production flow while balancing safety, accuracy, and recovery.
  • Make production-based sawing decisions to maximize throughput and minimize waste.
  • Monitor lumber, logs, saw performance, alignment, vibration, cut quality, and material flow for issues that could affect safety, quality, or production.
  • Recognize and communicate signs of equipment problems, including saw issues, poor cuts, jams, vibration, misalignment, or abnormal machine operation.
  • Work with the supervisor, shift lead, maintenance team, edger operator, trimmer operator, and other production employees to support mill flow.
  • Assist with routine cleanup, saw area housekeeping, and operator-level checks as directed.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including PPE, lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and safe work practices around sawmill equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support sawmill operations.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Operate the saw only when guards, controls, emergency stops, and safety devices are functioning properly.
  • Never bypass safety devices or reach into moving equipment.
  • Stop and report unsafe conditions, equipment issues, jams, or abnormal saw performance immediately.
  • Follow lockout/tagout and energy-control procedures before clearing jams, making adjustments, or entering restricted areas when required.
  • Maintain focus and awareness while operating high-speed cutting equipment.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a sawmill, lumber operation, manufacturing, equipment operation, farming, construction, or similar hands-on environment.
  • Ability to work safely around saws, conveyors, moving lumber, forklifts, and other industrial equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to make quick decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to recognize when equipment is not running correctly.
  • Reliable attendance and willingness to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as a sawyer, sawmill operator, machine operator, or lumber production employee.
  • Experience with circle saws, head rigs, resaws, edgers, trimmers, or related sawmill equipment.
  • Knowledge of pine logs, cants, lumber sizing, sawmill recovery, or production flow.
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic equipment issues and communicate clearly with maintenance.
  • Forklift, loader, or maintenance experience.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment
This position works in an industrial pine sawmill environment with exposure to noise, sawdust, moving equipment, lumber, sharp cutting equipment, vibration, weather conditions, and varying temperatures. The primary physical requirements of this role involve operating machine controls, maintaining focus, observing lumber flow, communicating with team members, and safely accessing the operator area. The employee may be required to sit or stand for extended periods, climb steps or platforms, bend, twist, reach, and perform occasional lifting or material handling as needed. Heavy or repetitive lifting is not a primary function of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
