About the Role

The Product Manager (Payments) is a core execution role within WEX's Health & Benefits digital organization. This role is responsible for driving the delivery and continuous improvement of WEX's payment products — including HSA debit card rails, claims reimbursement flows, ACH/RTP money movement, real-time payment notifications, and spend authorization logic — that sit at the intersection of member experience and financial operations.

This PM operates with a strong bias for outcomes over output: they connect every feature decision to adoption, retention, cost-to-serve, or revenue impact. They bring domain fluency in healthcare payments and fintech, use AI-enabled workflows as a default starting point for synthesis and analysis, and are trusted partners across engineering, compliance, operations, and external payment vendors.

This role is the payments execution engine for H&B's product organization. The right candidate is someone who is equally comfortable reviewing ACH return codes and presenting trade-off recommendations to senior stakeholders — and who makes disciplined prioritization decisions with incomplete information.

How You’ll Make an Impact:

As a Product Manager for Payments you will:

  • Execution & Outcomes-Oriented Delivery (60%): Own end-to-end execution for payment product features including HSA debit card rails, claims auto-adjudication, ACH/RTP money movement, and real-time payment notifications. Actively participate in and facilitate core Scrum ceremonies (e.g., Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Refinement, Demos, Retrospectives), stepping up to lead ceremonies as needed.  Drive short-term delivery with a bias for speed, iterating quickly based on stakeholder feedback and outcome data. Ensure delivery choices connect directly to adoption, revenue, and operational efficiency targets.

  • Discovery & Strategy Support (15%): Lead discovery for payments-specific product problems — including spend authorization flows, payment partner integrations, and compliance-adjacent money movement constraints. Synthesize customer insight, payment industry signals, and competitive intelligence into testable hypotheses. Use AI-enabled research tools to accelerate synthesis while maintaining rigorous human judgment on conclusions.

  • Insights-Driven Decision Making (10%): Navigate payment-specific metrics including authorization rates, decline rates, transaction error rates, auto-adjudication throughput, and cost-per-transaction. Use both qualitative and quantitative inputs to drive prioritization decisions. Cross-check AI-generated analysis against source data and apply appropriate rigor based on decision reversibility and risk.

  • Collaboration & Trusted Partnership (10%): Drive effective communication with engineering, compliance, finance, operations, and external payment partners (card networks, ACH processors, custodians). Clarify decision ownership, proactively resolve impediments, and ensure no ambiguity turns into delivery drift. Understand the H&B payment strategy and contribute grounded ideas on sequencing and trade-offs.

  • Customer Obsession & Learning (5%): Identify friction in the member payment experience — from card declines and reimbursement delays to claims submission errors — and translate trends into actionable product improvements. Participate in customer empathy sessions with employers, members, and brokers. Apply a test-and-learn approach to validate payment UX hypotheses before full build.

Your Skillset:

  • Payments Domain Expertise: Working knowledge of healthcare payment ecosystems: HSA/FSA/HRA debit card rails (Visa/Mastercard), ACH, RTP/FedNow, and claims reimbursement workflows. Familiarity with payment compliance constraints: IRS 213(d) substantiation rules, IIAS, Reg E, and AML/KYC implications for benefits accounts. Understanding of payment partner ecosystem: card processors, custodial bank partners, clearinghouses, and third-party payment APIs.

  • Product Execution: Ability to own end-to-end delivery for complex, dependency-heavy payment features across experience, technology, compliance, and operations. Strong prioritization discipline — can distinguish important from urgent, articulate feature trade-offs in business terms, and make bounded calls without full consensus. Comfortable operating with incomplete data; explicit about confidence levels, risk, and what still needs validation. Demonstrated track record in Agile product delivery, with hands-on experience participating in and leading team Scrum ceremonies.

  • Discovery & Customer Empathy: Experience leading discovery for payment-adjacent product problems, translating member and employer pain points into testable hypotheses. Participates in direct customer research; understands the 'why' behind payment friction — not just what members click but what prevents them from completing transactions or claiming reimbursements. AI-Native Execution: Uses AI as a default starting point for research synthesis, competitive analysis, and requirements drafting — while maintaining human accountability for judgment, risk framing, and final product decisions. Able to design AI-assisted workflows that remove manual steps without simply layering tools on top of existing habits.

  • Commercial Instinct & Systems Thinking: Connects roadmap decisions to adoption, efficiency, and revenue/retention impact — not just feature completeness. Understands how payment product choices affect cost-to-serve, operational load, error rates, and member financial outcomes.

  • Collaboration & Influence: Establishes clear decision ownership; keeps cross-functional teams aligned without requiring universal consensus before moving. Communicates clearly to engineering, compliance, finance, and operations partners; adapts narrative for technical and non-technical audiences.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in business, technology, computer science, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of professional experience, including 2+ years in product management roles with direct ownership of feature delivery.

  • Demonstrated experience in fintech, healthcare payments, or consumer financial products — with hands-on knowledge of payment rails, money movement, or benefits account platforms.

  • Proven ability to translate customer and operational insights into testable hypotheses and ship short-to-medium-term product outcomes.

  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, compliance, operations, and external vendor partners.

  • Comfort with both qualitative and quantitative analysis; ability to navigate data dashboards and make decisions with imperfect information.

  • Prior experience at a health benefits administrator, HSA/FSA/HRA platform, or fintech company

  • Familiarity with IRS substantiation requirements (IIAS, 213(d)), Reg E, and AML/KYC frameworks in a benefits payment context.

  • Experience with real-time payment (RTP/FedNow) or ACH product development.

  • Working knowledge of claims adjudication logic or auto-adjudication workflows.

  • Experience designing AI-assisted product workflows — using LLMs or agents to accelerate research, synthesis, or insight generation.

  • MBA or equivalent graduate education in business, technology, or health systems.

What will give you an edge:

Drawing from WEX's Digital Competencies 3.0 framework, the Payments PM at level III demonstrates:

  • Scope: Owns outcomes for a defined set of payment features. Independently connects digital work to customer value, operational realities, and business objectives — not just shipping features on time.

  • Discovery: Independently leads discovery by synthesizing customer insights, generating hypotheses, and designing lightweight experiments. Connects opportunity spaces to revenue levers and cost-to-serve implications, not just roadmap slots.

  • Decision Quality: Makes timely calls by combining data, model outputs, and frontline context. Explicit about confidence levels and what still needs validation before proceeding.

  • AI-Native Execution: Uses AI as the first pass for repeatable work — drafting, synthesis, competitive research — while keeping human accountability for judgment, escalation, and risk decisions.

  • Commercial Instinct: Connects every initiative to customer value, revenue, margin, retention, or operating efficiency. Frames payment features in terms of business outcomes, not just technical requirements.

  • Systems Thinking: Understands how payment product choices ripple through downstream operations, compliance obligations, member experience, and financial performance.

Travel Requirements:

  • Travel %: 5%

  • Overnight Travel %: 5%
