Atlassian is a global leader in cloud collaboration, and one of the world's largest users of PostgreSQL in the cloud. Our Jira and Confluence cloud products run on millions of Postgres databases, managed through AWS, Aurora and RDS . As our business and customer needs evolve, so do our technical requirements-driving us to innovate beyond traditional solutions.
To address advanced and emerging use cases, we are building a self-managed Postgres platform on AWS and GCP leveraging Kubernetes and open-source technologies. It is designed to:

• Efficiently pack thousands of databases into a single cluster, maximizing resource utilization and minimizing operational overhead (e.g., optimizing autovacuum processes).
• Manage connections at scale, supporting thousands of databases within a single cluster.
• Enable the development and integration of custom and existing Postgres extensions to meet unique business needs.

Our vision is to establish deep PostgreSQL expertise within Atlassian, starting with our India team. We are committed to building a team of experts-including established PostgreSQL contributors-who will:

• Drive Atlassian's contributions to the Postgres open-source community through code, reviews, and best practices.
• Set up and enforce operational standards for schema management, upgrades, patching, and database reliability.
• Mentor and guide engineers to become active open-source contributors and thought leaders in the database community.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to open-source projects and represent Atlassian in the broader PostgreSQL community
• Lead initiatives to improve scalability, performance, reliability, and security of the self managed Postgres
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define technical strategy and deliver robust solutions for complex storage challenges.
• Establish and promote best practices in distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and cost optimization.
• Mentor and develop engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• Deep expertise in PostgreSQL, including internals, extension development, performance tuning, and scaling.
• 10+ years of experience in backend software development, with a focus on distributed systems and storage solutions.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with AWS RDS/Aurora or equivalent cloud database platforms (GCP, Azure)
• Demonstrated leadership in technical design, mentoring, and open-source contribution.
• Ability to drive technical roadmaps, influence architectural decisions, and champion best practices across teams.
• Experience mentoring engineers and building high-performing, collaborative teams.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with PgBackRest and Patroni
• Practical experience with Kubernetes, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CDK, or CloudFormation), CI/CD pipelines
• Experience with data security, encryption, compliance (FedRamp,SOC2, GDPR, HIPAA), and disaster recovery strategies.
• Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch) and performance monitoring at scale.
