Are you passionate about the intricacies of the various programming languages, auto-instrumentation techniques, data aggregation and formatting, streaming architectures, building client side software, and SDKs?
New Relic is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead multiple language, browser, and mobile agent teams through a highly impactful transformation, building a brand-new observability experience. This high-impact engineering position is a phenomenal opportunity to own and build a set of next generation experiences and capabilities for the company.
What You’ll Do
- Provide architectural guidance and direction across Products and Frameworks
- Partner with several lead software engineers to translate corporate strategy into group objectives, and architect technical challenges into cohesive strategies across New Relic’s suite of products
- Design and deliver high-quality solutions - Maintainable from reliability, supportability, scalability, performance, and cost perspective while meeting the present and future functional needs of our customers and business.
- Cross-pollinate best practices and patterns between teams, promote standardization and reuse. Proactively discourage bad practices and patterns.
- Actively build New Relic’s engineering bench strength and culture by mentoring, instructing, and guiding other engineers.
This role requires
- Overall 16+ Years and at-least 8+ years of technical leadership helping engineering teams thrive
- Deep experience with three or more of these languages: Java, Node, Rust, Go, Python, PHP, C, .Net, and Ruby
- Ability to collaborate and impact decisions at the interpersonal level
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Nice-to-have:
- Observability domain knowledge
- Experience engaging in open-source projects.
- Knowledge of or participation in the OpenTelemetry project.

Bonus points if you have
- Observability domain knowledge
- Experience operating containerized services (Kubernetes, Mesos/Marathon)
- Solid understanding of databases (RDS, MySQL, PostgreSQL)
- Experience with configuration management tooling (Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet)
- BS/MS/PhD in CS (or equivalent).
