Position Description:

Designs and develops mainframe applications using Common Business-Oriented Language (COBOL) and implements changes in the production environment. Reads and analyzes code and logs for defect and incident triaging and root cause analysis. Provides business solutions by developing multiple complex software applications that streamline processes, improve system reliability, and support critical business functions. Ensures code reviews, unit testing, and integration testing are completed efficiently and effectively. Uses business knowledge to translate divisional initiatives into technical solutions by developing complex applications and conducting studies of alternatives. Analyzes and recommends changes to project development policies, procedures, standards, and strategies for development experts and management. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participates in architecture design teams.
  • Defines and implements application-level architecture.
  • Develops applications on complex projects, components, and subsystems for the division.
  • Recommends development testing tools and methodologies and reviews and validates test plans.
  • Responsible for QA readiness of software deliverables.
  • Develops comprehensive documentation for multiple applications or subsystems.
  • Establishes full project life cycle plans for complex projects across multiple platforms.
  • Responsible for meeting project goals on-time and on-budget.
  • Advises on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects.
  • Plans and coordinates complex project schedules and assignments for multiple projects.
  • Acts as a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project/technology issues.
  • Provides technology solutions to daily issues and technical evaluation estimates on technology initiatives.
  • Advises senior management on technical strategy.
  • Mentors junior team members.
  • Performs independent and complex technical and functional analysis for multiple projects supporting several divisional initiatives. 
  • Develops original and creative technical solutions to on-going development efforts.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and five (5) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) designing, developing, and testing robust batch and online applications in a financial services environment aimed at improving quality and robustness.

Or, alternatively, Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and three (3) years of experience as a Principal Software Engineer/Developer (or closely related occupation) designing, developing, and testing robust batch and online applications in a financial services environment aimed at improving quality and robustness.

Skills and Knowledge:

Candidate must also possess:

  • Demonstrated Expertise (“DE”) developing batch applications on mainframe systems using COBOL, Job Control Language (JCL), and IBM DB2 or Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM); and executing unattended jobs that process large volumes of data utilizing IBM utilities Data Facility Sort (DFSORT), Integrated Data Cluster Access Method Services (IDCAMS), and IMB Error Facility Branch to Register 14 (IEFBR14).  
  • DE developing DB2 databases and VSAM files real-time connectivity to web-based online brokerage transaction processing systems through Customer Information Control System (CICS) Transaction Gateway, using COBOL-CICS programming modules. 
  • DE developing and maintaining highly reliable, secure, and high-performance enterprise mainframe applications using IBM tools -- ENDEVOR, DFSORT, DB2 Stored Procedures, FILE-AID for DB2, and Multiple Virtual Storage (MVS) -- to ensure robust system reliability, data integrity, and security. 
  • DE processing batch jobs and large-scale data using JCL, COBOL, DB2, and mainframe tools (Control-M) for scheduling, Time Sharing Option (TSO) for multi-user access, Interactive System Productivity Facility (ISPF) for dataset and job management, and SQL for querying, to ensure efficient, reliable, and secure execution of enterprise workloads.
