About the Role

The GB energy system is entering a period of unprecedented transformation. Rapid decarbonisation, evolving market frameworks, emerging technologies and increasing system complexity are fundamentally changing how security of supply risks emerge and how they must be understood.

At NESO, we believe the future of adequacy assessment will not be solved in one domain. It requires individuals who can combine deep analytical expertise with an exceptional understanding of power systems, GB electricity markets and energy policy, and who can bring those disciplines together to solve problems that do not yet have established answers. To meet this challenge, we are creating a new role for an individual with an advanced set of skills, focused on the future of electricity security of supply.

This role is intended for an individual with rare and highly sought-after expertise. Someone recognised not only for their technical depth, but for their ability to connect insights across modelling, technologies, markets and policy to identify emerging risks, challenge conventional thinking and shape the future direction of adequacy assessment.

This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key Accountabilities

• Maximise the value of NESO's specialist modelling and analytical expertise by connecting insights across adequacy modelling, technology development, electricity markets and policy, ensuring individual areas of excellence contribute to a coherent understanding of future security of supply.
• Define the future direction of security of supply assessment, working with our modelling experts to identify where existing methodologies, assumptions and analytical frameworks must evolve to address emerging energy system challenges.
• Act as a leading technical authority on electricity security of supply, providing expert insight and thought leadership on nationally significant adequacy issues.
• Serve as the technical anchor across modelling, technologies, markets and policy, integrating expertise from multiple disciplines to develop a coherent whole-system understanding of security of supply.
• Enhance and connect the work of NESO's specialist analytical teams, ensuring technical insights, methodologies and assumptions remain coherent across domains and time horizons.
• Shape external thinking and internal capability, influencing national debate on adequacy while developing the next generation of security of supply expertise within NESO.

About You

You are recognised for your expertise in security of supply, energy system adequacy or a closely related field and can operate confidently at the intersection of modelling, technologies, markets and policy.

• Significant experience within the GB energy sector, typically 10+ years, which could also include time spent in advanced academic research.
• Deep expertise in electricity security of supply, capacity adequacy assessment and probabilistic risk analysis.
• Advanced knowledge of adequacy modelling techniques, optimisation methods, statistical analysis and uncertainty assessment.
• Expert capability in industry-standard energy market and power system modelling platforms such as PLEXOS, PyPSA, Antares, BID3 or equivalent tools.
• Expert understanding of the GB electricity system, including generation technologies, storage, interconnection, flexibility markets and emerging low-carbon technologies.
• Strong knowledge of GB Capacity Market design, operation and policy, together with the analytical approaches used to assess resource adequacy and security of supply.
• Deep understanding of GB electricity markets, investment drivers and market participant behaviour, and how these influence adequacy outcomes.
• A broad understanding of GB energy policy and the ability to identify security of supply implications arising from wider policy and market developments.
• Awareness of current and emerging adequacy challenges in GB, including areas such as long-duration energy storage, storage coordination, interconnection, future market arrangements and Great Britain's relationship with the Internal Energy Market.
• Experience developing novel methodologies or analytical frameworks where established approaches are insufficient to answer complex security of supply questions.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage credibly with senior stakeholders across Government, industry, academia and regulatory bodies.
• A passion for technical leadership, collaboration and developing future capability across the wider organisation.
