As a Principal Market Design Engineer at MISO, you’ll play an important role in evaluating how our wholesale electricity markets are performing today while helping design how they need to operate in the future. You’ll use engineering analysis, market data, and your understanding of power system operations to identify opportunities for improvement and develop solutions that support reliable and efficient grid operations.

You’ll work alongside engineers, economists, market experts, and technology teams to evaluate and advance market design changes. Just as importantly, you’ll help communicate your findings and recommendations to internal teams and MISO stakeholders, turning complex technical analysis into informed decisions.

You can independently evaluate system and market performance, identify meaningful trends or issues, and translate your analysis into recommendations that improve MISO’s markets. You’ll be contributing to new or enhanced market design initiatives and helping advance changes to market models, optimization algorithms, and policies that improve efficiency, reliability, and overall market performance.

As Our Principal Market Design Engineer, You Will:

  • Perform engineering and analytical studies of system and market operations, including participant activity, pricing trends, supply and demand imbalances, market anomalies, and overall market efficiency.
  • Develop and evaluate new or enhanced wholesale electricity market design initiatives as industry and grid needs continue to evolve.
  • Assess the impact of proposed market changes on market structure, competitiveness, efficiency, reliability, and power system operations.
  • Recommend and help implement improvements to market models, optimization algorithms, and policy provisions.
  • Develop and monitor key market performance indicators to evaluate market conditions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Analyze market and operational data to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed market rule and tariff changes.
  • Review MISO market systems for alignment with tariff requirements and recommend system or tariff modifications when appropriate.
  • Collaborate across engineering, economics, technology, and other disciplines to develop solutions to complex market design challenges.
  • Clearly communicate complex technical findings and market design proposals to internal teams, leadership, and MISO stakeholders.

We’re Looking for Someone With:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology.
  • At least eight (8) years of job-related experience.
  • At least two (2) years of specific experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Power system analysis and operations and associated software development
    • Statistical and econometric analysis
    • Market analysis and design
    • Optimization algorithms
    • Econometrics

While not required, it would be advantageous to have some of the following:

  • Advanced degree.
  • Previous deregulated wholesale electricity market or utility experience.
  • Previous energy industry experience with a Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) or RTO market participant.
  • NERC certification.

The base salary compensation range being offered for this role is $145,000–$170,000 USD annually. Base salary range for this position is included in accordance with requirements of various state/local pay transparency legislation. Please note that salaries may vary for different individuals in the same role based on several factors, including but not limited to location of the role, individual competencies, education/professional certifications, and qualifications/experience.
