Our Why

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role (your why)

As a Principal Developer in our ServiceNow project team, you’ll be a technical leader responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining application software across a range of technologies and platforms. You’ll lead Development teams to deliver innovative solutions, mentor other developers, and ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to Datacom’s high standards of quality and security.

Our offices are based across Australia and New Zealand, and the team works in a hybrid model — one to two days in the office and work from home. We like to bring people together in person when we can, but we also value flexibility and work/life balance. You and the team you join will have the freedom to find what works best!

What you’ll do

At the moment, as a Principal Developer you will be focused on:

  • Leading development teams, including planning, controlling, and reporting on progress.
  • Designing, coding, testing, and installing applications programs — in one major language or across multiple platforms.
  • Developing high-quality operating and systems documentation.
  • Mentoring developers on evaluating IT applications, equipment requirements, and development standards.
  • Overseeing analysis, design, debugging, and modification of software for commercial or end-user applications.
  • Ensuring projects meet budgets, time frames, and quality/security standards.
  • Managing the installation, testing, and maintenance of new or modified software systems.
  • Analysing and resolving operating system and performance issues.
  • Ensuring health and safety practices are implemented and followed in line with Datacom policy.

We’re an agile organisation that evolves continuously to meet customer, technology, and stakeholder needs — meaning your role can grow and adapt over time.

What you’ll bring

Required experience:
• 10+ years in software development, with at least 4 years in a large IT organisation.
• Expert knowledge of ServiceNow modules including ITOM and ITSM
• Advanced skills in one or more major programming languages
• Excellent customer relationship and stakeholder management skills.
• Proven analytical and problem-solving capability with strong planning and consultative skills.
• Effective communication and presentation skills across technical and business levels.

Nice to have:
• Master’s degree in Business Administration or Computer Science.
• Experience with advanced or emerging frameworks and application modernisation approaches.
• Demonstrated success leading within multi-project or multi-team environments.

We care about our people and provide a range of perks such as social events, chill-out spaces, remote working, flexi-hours and professional development courses to name a few. You’ll have the opportunity to learn, develop your career, connect and bring your true self to work.

You will be recognised and valued for your contributions and be able to do your work in a collegial, flat-structured environment. We operate at the forefront of technology to help Australia and New Zealand’s largest enterprise organisations explore possibilities and solve their greatest challenges — so you will never run out of interesting new challenges and opportunities.
