Your role and responsibilities

We are seeking a motivated Power Electronics Engineering Senior Designer to be part of the expansion of our business with a novel solid state transformer technology for datacenter applications.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of the ELDS R&D center of excellence team for Solid State Transformer in charge of the design and development of the future Solid State Transformer products family with first focus on Data Center application requirements. In this context, and as part of the R&D SST development team, we are looking for a Power Electronics Engineering Senior Designer to reinforce the product development transfer from R&D to Product Operations, Service, etc.

You will be part of R&D product development and productization activities in the field of power electronics for the ABB SST for Datacenter Products, in close cooperation with a highly qualified team in a global and multicultural setup.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Designing, specifying, testing, qualifying, and certifying the main components, sub-systems, and full converter system for the Data Center R&D Power Electronics team.
  • Creating, analyzing, and reviewing equipment designs, test setups, and installations, including specifications, documentation, and technical support for design, manufacturing, and servicing.
  • Collaborating and interacting closely with other R&D functions such as System Design, Control Software and Hardware, Mechanics, and with organizational functions such as supply chain management, production, service, product management, and marketing.
  • Contributing to maintaining and further developing the key Power Electronics Technologies specialised skills and know-how of the SST for Data Centers R&D team, including intellectual property (IP) and standards activities.

Qualifications for the role

  • You hold a University Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on Power Electronics product development and production.
  • You possess a solid background of more than 5 years in industrial Power Electronics development and productization. Advanced skills and practical experience in High Power and Medium Voltage converter development and productization are considered beneficial.
  • You demonstrate experience in electro-mechanical analysis, design, and production of power electronics converters using modern engineering tools.
  • You show high interest and focus on practical, hands-on implementation of designs and solutions, including testing and validation of MV high-power converters for introducing new products and functionalities to the market.
  • You are highly interested in product development, self-organized, and motivated, enjoying work in a highly qualified research and development team composed of experts in different domains and global locations.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English; German language skills are beneficial.
  • You are available to travel sporadically.
