Position Summary:
Reporting to the Manager, Physical Security, the Physical Security Advisor provides a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus facilities, in conformity with applicable laws, regulations and codes. Provides security advising expertise to the McGill community. Participates in the development of programs and standards for the protection, safety, and security of university property and in all University activities. Advises clients regarding the University's security policies and procedures. Establishes and maintains good rapport with students, faculty, staff and the University community. Builds relationships by identifying and responding to their needs and providing support in the delivery of services. Participate in the development and implementation of policies and new initiatives that support the strategic direction of Security Services regarding systems that are moderately complex and to ensure that services meet or exceed established quality standards. Keeps up to date on issues and offer potential solutions to aid in the implementation of new services or the improvement of service in security.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert advice to the University community on loss prevention and crime risk management, focusing on construction and renovation projects at both the Downtown and Macdonald campuses.
  • Manages the day-to-day operation of the security device request service.
  • Manages the security improvement projects on campus.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with building directors, area access managers, project managers and student groups.
  • Use professional expertise, specialized skills, and knowledge to advise project managers, building directors and area access managers on security best practices.
  • Perform and deliver physical security surveys, audits and/or security device request consultations. 
  • Manages the implementation plan for the approved recommendations.
  • Works in collaboration with Facilities Operations and Development and Infrastructure and Information Security to ensure installation work is delivered.
  • Oversees the work of external security professionals and service providers in the installation process. Keeps clients informed on progress and maintains the client relationship beyond the immediate project’s completion.
  • Ensure that University spaces and work processes respect best practices, policies, procedures, legislation and regulations related to security.
  • Develop recommendations and conduct follow-ups to address security deficiencies identified.
  • Supervises the Client Support Representatives in relation to security Device programming and ensuring procedures are followed accordingly.
  • Works closely in collaboration with project managers to advise on security device installations for construction and renovation projects. Manage multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Respond professionally and accurately to all stakeholders’ immediate service needs.
  • Attend project kick off, progress and design meetings.
  • Perform key projects for construction and/or renovation undertakings.
  • Participate at meetings, make recommendations and provide solutions.
  • Assume the role of the onsite security resource person for emergencies that may arise at the Downtown Campus, when required.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Requires advanced knowledge of physical security devices and key management. Requires a security permit for Electronic Security Systems from le Bureau de la Sécurité privée. Basic knowledge of NFPA standards and the Quebec Construction Code – Chapter 1, Building; as they relate to doors and locks, is desired. The following certifications or training are considered assets: a CPP or PSP designation; Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED); ASP Construction Attestation; Incident Command System (ICS) and project management. Requires English and French spoken and written.
