The Role

We are looking for a Payroll Administrator to join our corporate accounting team. The Payroll Administrator will report directly to the Corporate Controller and work closely with peers in the corporate accounting team, HR, strategic finance and other business partners. The Payroll Administrator will be responsible for processing semi-monthly and bi-weekly payroll for a growing multi-state, international organization and ensure employees and business partners are given the highest levels of customer service. We use enterprise software (Workday, Deel and ADP) for efficiency and scale.  

We are open to candidates based in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, CA or San Francisco Bay Area, CA. The role requires an in office presence at least once a week.

To join our team, you should be excited to:

  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing, including on-cycle and off-cycle payrolls for biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly cycles, benefit deductions and 401(k) contributions
  • Test new payroll configurations and develop cross-functional processes
  • Oversee periodic, monthly, and quarterly payroll tax reports 
  • Conduct regular payroll reviews and ensure accuracy and compliance with labor laws, tax regulations and statutory requirements
  • Manage company 401(k) plan, including rollovers, loans, and contributions and perform periodic
  • review to ensure accuracy
  • Work closely with external auditors to complete annual 401(k) audit
  • Collaborate with the human resources and finance departments to manage employee department changes
  • Work closely with HR on timely and accurate processing of leave of absence pay, terminations and garnishments
  • Manage employee and contractor onboarding in Deel
  • Review non-exempt timesheets and investigate potential missing hours
  • Periodically audit employee withholdings and deductions to ensure accuracy year-end accuracy 
  • Serve as the firm’s point-of-contact for employees regarding all payroll questions and concerns
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality at all times related to compensation information
  • Prepare payroll tax returns for multiple states

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, human resources or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in payroll management or similar experience (e.g. Payroll Accounting, Compensation/Benefits)
  • Experience managing multi-country payroll processes
  • Knowledgeable of FLSA, state wage and employment laws, payroll taxation and statutory compliance requirements
  • Experience in handling payroll audits, inspections and compliance assessments
  • Proficiency in payroll software and systems, such as Workday and/or ADP, with experience implementing and managing payroll systems
  • Excellent understanding of financial principles and the ability to reconcile payroll with financial records
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in managing complex payroll calculation data
  • Good organizational and time management skills to meet strict payroll deadlines and manage multiple priorities
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with employees at all levels of the organization
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
  • Proficiency in Google Apps and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $167,000-$194,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z Carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
