The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Optical Engineering Manager to lead our talented team of optical engineers. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of laser systems, optical design, and laser materials processing. They will be responsible for driving the development and implementation of cutting-edge optical solutions for our next-generation semiconductor equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of optical engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Assign projects, set priorities, and monitor progress to ensure timely and effective completion of tasks.
  • Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and support the professional development of team members.
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new optical engineering talent.
  • Provide technical leadership for the design, development, and optimization of complex optical systems for laser-based semiconductor equipment.
  • Lead the development of optical specifications, tolerance analyses, and performance models.
  • Ensure the integration of optical systems with mechanical, electrical, and software components.
  • Drive the development of new optical technologies and solutions to meet evolving customer requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise in laser systems, including laser sources, beam delivery, and laser-material interaction.
  • Oversee laser safety including training, culture, record-keeping and compliance.
  • Experience with high-power laser systems.
  • Knowledge of optical alignment and calibration techniques.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of laser control and monitoring systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex laser system issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, and manufacturing.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers.
  • Present technical findings and recommendations to management and customers.
  • Develop and manage project plans, timelines, and budgets and report on project progress and team performance.
  • Ensure adherence to quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage vendor relationships and procurement of optical components.
  • Oversee the creation of detailed technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and user manuals.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in optical system design and development, preferably in the semiconductor or laser/laser processing industry, and with a Ph. D in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience in leading and managing a team of optical engineers.
  • Extensive experience with laser systems, optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V), and optical metrology.
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes.
  • Deep understanding of optics, laser physics, and optical instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications          

  • Experience with laser materials processing.
  • Experience with project management.
  • Experience with machine vision systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience and proficiency to manage projects and teams effectively. 
  • Strong knowledge of optical component selection.
