About the Role

Ribbon is offering a rare opportunity for an outstanding MSc or PhD researcher in optical communications to join a cutting-edge national research project in collaboration with the Israel Innovation Authority.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of advanced optical physics, digital twins, and AI-driven modeling, contributing to research that shapes the future of high‑capacity optical networks. This position is ideal for researchers who want their academic excellence to translate into real‑world technological impact.

What You’ll Be Working On

As an Optical Communications Researcher, you will lead and contribute to advanced research in coherent optical communication systems, tackling challenges that go beyond standard experimental boundaries.

Your work will include:

  • Investigating complex optical phenomena that are not fully measurable or observable, using deep analytical and theoretical reasoning
  • Developing high‑fidelity theoretical and simulation models that accurately represent real‑world optical behavior
  • Exploring novel and emerging optical network architectures, often with limited prior art or validation data
  • Playing a key role in Digital Twin research, including:
    • Research and development of an Optical Layer Network Digital Twin
    • Combining optical hardware, software, and AI/ML algorithms
    • Providing expert insight and solutions to complex system‑level challenges arising from digital twin activities
  • Performing advanced simulation and modeling of optical phenomena, including the application of machine learning techniques

Why This Role Is Special

  • Participation in a high‑visibility national project supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Space
  • Direct exposure to industrial‑grade optical systems alongside deep academic research
  • Opportunity to influence future optical network design and innovation
  • Work in a team that values intellectual ownership, curiosity, and independent thinking
  • A strong platform for future careers in advanced R&D, academia, or the deep‑tech industry

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a highly motivated researcher who enjoys solving complex problems and connecting theory with real systems.

Required qualifications:

  • MSc or PhD student/researcher in optical communications, optical networks, or related fields
  • Proven academic research experience in optical communication systems or optical phenomena
  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB and/or Python
  • Excellent analytical thinking with the ability to see the big picture
  • Strong conceptual and synthesis skills for building accurate theoretical and simulation models
  • Ability to simplify complex problems while respecting system constraints
  • High level of autonomy, ownership, and a self‑driven research mindset

Advantage

  • Experience or knowledge in Machine Learning / AI

Work Model

  • Hybrid position - 3 days per week on‑site
  • Location: Petah Tikva
