Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL)has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
As a Test and Measurement Specialist III in the Energy Technology Department (ETD), you will be assisting in the characterization and life testing of spacecraft batteries for national security space customers. This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA.
What You'll Be Doing
- S/he will be responsible for providing laboratory support for ETD's Battery Evaluation Laboratory (BEL).
- You will work with a team of (10-20) batteryscientists and test engineers to design, build, and maintain battery test stations. The majority of BEL's battery testing requires custom-built hardware to subject space vehicle batteries to flight-like environmental and electrical conditions.
- The ideal candidate will collaborate with engineers on laboratory testing, and suggest appropriate materials, test equipment, and techniques. You will refine electromechanical test designs as needed.
- S/he will set up and perform experiments on batteries and electrical equipment. This includes assembling lab materials, equipment, and chemicals and following a procedure to collect and analyze data using measurement equipment.
- In addition, you will also assist in the design and construction of new diagnostic tools.
- You may also write test procedures and equipment operational procedures to support existing and new lab tests or facilities.
- You will be responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, including building, repairing, and ensuring the calibration of the metrology equipment as well as maintaining a safe and organized laboratory environment.
What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of related industry experience
- Experience working with laboratory safety protocols
- Knowledge and use of test instruments (DC power supply, digital multimeter, oscilloscope, etc.)
- Experience soldering - through-hole and surface mount
- Experience with mechanical tools (drills, saws, torque wrenches, compression lugs, etc.)
- Ability to quickly troubleshoot problems - electrical and mechanical
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
- Associate's Degree or equivalent is preferred
- 5 or more years of applicable professional or educational experience is highly desirable
- Certifications or similar within aerospace or aviation
- Graduated from a technical college or other recognized apprenticeship
- Safety training and/or safety certifications preferred
- Electronic Technician and/or Machine Shop training
- Experience reading and following an electrical schematic
