Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Beyond redesigning the automobile, we’re rethinking the entire ecosystem. From excitement to sustainability, utility to comfort, we’re working to deliver joyful mobility experiences without the pain points of today.  This new approach means shifting conventional thinking – among policymakers and regulators as well as consumers.  The Director of State Policy role will be part of a growing team driving implementation of the Rivian vision and mission.  As Rivian moves forward with the ecosystem that focuses on the customer experience throughout the entirety of consumer experience, the Director of State Policy will lead the team that ensures state policies and laws support that approach.

This is what you’ll do:

  • Directly interact with policy makers at the state level, including legislators, governor office personnel, and various departments to shape policy and laws that promote Rivian and its electrification and transportation technology mission.
  • Coordinate strategy and lead a team of Policy experts that will anticipate and influence new state level policies, legislation or regulations on issues such as manufacturer direct sales, electric vehicle fees, incentives and other issues that affect Rivian and its mission to proliferate all electric adventure vehicles and related products and services.
  • Cross team with various Rivian divisions, including Corporate Strategy, Finance, Engineering, Manufacturing and others (including within Legal) to ensure policies and laws maximize support for EVs, advanced transportation systems and supporting products, while ensuring impediments from such policies and laws are minimized.

This is what you'll need:

  • A minimum of 12 years of experience engaging state policymakers, legislators and/or regulators in the areas of transportation, clean energy, or technology.
  • A track record of superior accomplishment, achievement, and ability (results matter!).
  • A thorough understanding of state policy, laws, legislative procedure, and regulatory processes with an ability to draft, read, understand and work with local statutes and regulations.
  • A proven track record of project leadership and autonomy in a fast-paced and dynamic atmosphere with the ability to work in a team as well as cooperatively with a diverse group of partners and stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrated record of successful management experience (must have successfully led a team to achieve results).
  • Expertise in transportation, energy and environmental issues, with a focus on the electric vehicle space.
  • A strong work ethic and “can-do” spirit.
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task on diverse issues simultaneously
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from a recognized & reputable educational institution (advanced degree a plus).
  • Willingness to travel (potential for in excess of 50%).

This is what would make you stand out:

  • Direct experience with state issues impacting electric vehicles including direct sales legislation, electric vehicle fees and infrastructure funding issues, and electric vehicle incentive programs.

This is where you’ll work:

Department: Legal

Location: Southern California or Washington, D.C. area
