Overview
This position is remote but may require travel at the discretion of leadership.

The Coding Education Specialist position supports the facility coding education program to ensure that Novant Health receives appropriate reimbursement and complies with industry standards & guidelines. Additionally, this position should be a subject matter expert in inpatient or outpatient patient types of hospital coding activities.

The Coding Education Specialist position should be a subject matter expert in resolving CCI, OCE, and Medical Necessity edits in the radiology, laboratory, and medicine areas, using CMS and payor-specific guidance.

The Coding Education Specialist supports the Coding Education Lead by assisting with daily activities and oversight for educating all coding department new hires on facility inpatient or outpatient record types, per AHA Official Coding Guidelines, standards, and rules. In addition, this position will assist in the evaluation and development of available coursework through our learning management system to ensure all coding colleagues are current with regulatory issues.

The Coding Education Specialist supports the Coding Education Lead by proactively managing daily communications with the corporate coding team. The Coding Education Specialist will work closely with team members in addressing issues related to accurate/timely coding, documentation, unbilled accounts management, and denials. In addition, this position will often work with multi-disciplinary teams in addressing issues related to coding and billing operations (as applicable). The Coding Education Specialist may also assist in areas of corporate coding, including production coding and auditing as needed.

Qualifications

  • Education:High school diploma required. 2 Year / Associate Degree, preferred. 4 Year / Bachelors Degree, preferred.
  • Experience:Five years of hospital coding experience (in one core area) required. Minimum of one (1) year experience as a coding educator preferred.
  • Licensure/certification/registration: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, or CPC-A required. CRC, CPMA, preferred.
  • Additional skills required:
    • Ability to work remotely and independently and resolve issues via IM, phone, email, text.
    • Ability to troubleshoot issues (including IT issues) in a remote environment.
    • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
    • Extensive knowledge of inpatient and outpatient reimbursement methodologies.
    • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and payer-specific regulations and policies about documentation, coding, and billing.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Requires excellent organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
    • Must be able to interact with individuals of all cultures and levels of authority.
    • Knowledge of creation and presentation of materials for adult learners.
    • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite, including using Word templates, creating PowerPoints, maneuvering Excel spreadsheets (creating pivot tables, trending large amounts of data, etc.).
    • Ability to navigate CMS website for NCCI manual, NCD/LCD information, and Medicare Claims Processing Manuals.
  • Additional Skills/Requirements (preferred): Extensive knowledge of HCPCS and CPT coding related to charging. Ability to apply coding principles for correct charging, including Infusion & Injection Hierarchy, E/M guidelines, Supervision & Interpretation of IVR procedures.
