Job Description

We're looking for an Operational Risk Manager to support and contribute to the build, implementation and day-to-day management of our operational risk framework, provide guidance on risk incidents, support risk assessments and scenarios.The role sits in the second line of defence and reports to the Head of Risk - EU & UK in Belgium.

You’ll contribute to the mission by:

Supporting Wisers in rolling out and embedding core elements of the risk management framework, with a focus on the broad range of operational risks in Wise EU  risk profile (e.g. operational resilience, third party risk, technology and data risk, people risks and more). We need to make sure we're identifying the right risks and growing in control, but we want to do so whilst continuing with our agile "test and learn" approach to launching products.

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Supporting our Head of Risk - EU & UK in rolling out a best-in-class operational risk framework, including embedding of the risk and control self assessment process, risk incident and issues management.

  • Partnering with ‘first line’ teams  EU level and Group level (servicing operations, third party and banking partner management, data and security, people, legal) to provide risk support in the assessment of systems and infrastructure risk and security risk, including  the development of new products and features by embedding good risk practices and finding solutions to problems, identifying risks and recommending controls.

  • Play a key role in the management of risk incidents and issues that occur 

  • Supporting the development and implementation of risk policies, procedures, key risk indicators, and risk appetite statements

  • Conducting in-depth reviews of different areas of the business, their adoption and implementation of risk management practices to oversight committees (most notably, the  Europe Board and Effective Leaders Committee)

  • Promoting and helping embed a strong risk culture, making risk meaningful and relevant to everyone at Wise Europe

What you’ll bring:

  • You have worked in the financial services / banking / fintech sector and have a keen interest and proven experience in payment services, operational controls and reporting

  • You specialise in one or more subdomains of operational/non-financial risk but you are adaptable in managing operational risk both broadly across multiple risk domains.  

  • While technology and security is covered directly by other roles within the team, given Wise is a technology-led company, an adeptness at understanding of technology risks and issues is a must.

  • The ability to think creatively when resolving problems and identify alternative approaches where established procedures may not exist

  • You are confident and credible in interactions with stakeholders and you are able to provide challenge, support and oversight of risk matters.

  • You are confident with conducting data analysis and data-driven problem solving and solutionising

  • Experience supporting risk assessments and/or operational risk event capture and analysis and finding new and innovative ways to do things.

 

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in the financial services, banking, or fintech sector, with a strong interest in payment services, operational controls, and reporting.
  • Specialization in one or more subdomains of operational/non-financial risk, with the ability to manage operational risk across multiple domains.
  • Adept understanding of technology risks and issues, essential for a technology-led company like Wise.
  • Creative problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify alternative approaches where established procedures may not exist.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact confidently and credibly with stakeholders, providing challenge, support, and oversight on risk matters.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and data-driven problem-solving.
  • Experience in supporting risk assessments, operational risk event capture, and analysis, with a focus on innovation and finding new ways to improve processes.
