An organization within Northrop Grumman’s Payload and Ground Systems Division (PGSD), Mission Enabling Products business unit (MEP BU) is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of space vehicle structures and subsystems. Products include spacecraft panels, bus structures, precision optical structures, deployable structural systems and mechanisms, heat pipes, propulsion tanks, solar arrays, and antenna reflectors. Our products are on virtually every U.S. satellite built in the last 20 years.
The Propulsion operating unit (OU) with the MEP BU is seeking a Manager Engineering 3 to lead the Engineering organization for the operating unit in Commerce, CA. The Propulsion OU designs and manufactures propellant management devices and tanks. The Senior Engineering Manager will report to the Senior Engineering Director of the MEP BU, and will be responsible for engineering disciplines at the OU including design, analysis, Materials & Process, test, and project engineering.
- Primary responsibilities include:
- Functional Leadership: Manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers and professionals, including employee development, training and mentoring. Establish and track goals and objectives for staff, conduct employee performance reviews, and implement employee development
- Staffing: Forecast staffing needs and ensure Engineering organization is adequately staffed
- Program Execution: Support program IPTs to successfully manage/complete hardware and tooling design and drawings which meet program technical requirements, schedule needs. Lead drawing release scheduling, design and analysis completion, including resource assignments
- Continuous Improvement: Develop, implement, and support process improvements, tools and training to reduce Engineering costs, improve quality, and reduce schedule duration. Implement lessons learned, standard practices, best practices, and continuous improvement plans. Lead projects and plans to improve design technology, strategic capability, and capacity
- Metrics: Establish and maintain metrics that provide real-time visibility to measure, monitor, and control process performance, including key inputs, outputs, and early warning event triggers. Track key performance indices of On-Time Delivery and First Pass Yield. Apply Earned Value Management principles to track cost and schedule performance of design effort
- Customer: Support internal and external customer meetings and industry audits
- Business Development: Provide inputs for proposal efforts and approve basis of estimates
Basic Qualifications:
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering or related engineering/scientific discipline and nine (9) years of design related experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience), including at least 5 years of experience in a leadership role with direct reports
- Proficiency in NX and TeamCenter (>3 years using the tools)
- Expertise in one of the following core competency areas: design, tooling, or analysis engineering
- Understanding of Aerospace industry standards and specifications and application to space flight components and drawings
- A broad understanding of engineering, manufacturing, cost and schedule execution, scope management, and risk management is required
- Excellent oral and written communication, computer, documentation, and presentation skills are required
- US Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications:
- MS in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
- Experience with propulsion tanks or systems in space applications
- Experience with welding processes
Salary Range: $164,300.00 - $246,500.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.The application period for the job is estimated to be 20 days from the job posting date.
