SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Perioperative Assistant Nurse Manager, the Operating Room Equipment Coordinator is responsible for learning the coordination, care, and management of specialty surgical equipment. The coordinator works collaboratively with the Perioperative Nurse Manager, Perioperative Assistant Nurse Manager, and OR Floor coordinator, OR RN, and surgical technicians to support day-to-day operational needs based on the OR schedule.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Collaboration and Support of Surgical Team

  • Works under the direction of a Registered Nurse to ensure all required equipment is available for scheduled procedures.
  • Completes orientation with an assigned Equipment Coordinator, supervised by the Perioperative Nurse Manager, Perioperative Assistant Nurse Manager, and OR Floor coordinator.
  • Completes all assigned competencies.
  • Reviews OR schedule to anticipate and resolve equipment needs or conflicts.
  • Assists with the setup, transport, docking, and basic troubleshooting of complex surgical systems including robotic platforms, advanced imaging equipment, and laser or energy-based devices, in collaboration with specialty teams and Biomedical Engineering.
  • Disassembles, cleans/processes, and returns equipment to storage following procedures.
  • Initiate, track, and follow-up on repair work orders; coordinate with Biomedical /

Clinical Engineering to ensure timely repairs and return to service.

  • Maintain accurate logs of equipment use, maintenance, cleaning, re-processing, repairs, and disposals.
  • Maintains OR tables, positioning devices, and other assigned equipment as directed.
  • Provide basic patient-related support (transport, positioning, prep, recovery) when needed — especially in mixed OR / procedural environments.
  • Adhere to all regulatory and accreditation standards (e.g., infection control / sterilization, waste disposal, safety, radiation safety if applicable).
     

2. Patient and Staff Safety

  • Perform pre-case functionality and safety checks of all equipment (power cords, batteries, video towers, insufflators, scopes) and document readiness for every case.
  • Assists with OR turnover and case setup as appropriate.
  • Opens sterile supplies per established protocols.
  • Reports and delivers broken or malfunctioning equipment to designated personnel.
  • Records equipment sent out for repair.

3. Interpersonal Communication

  • Maintains positive working relationships with the OR supply area, Instrument Room, Sterile Processing, Biomedical Engineering, and OR staff.
  • Demonstrates respectful communication and appropriate conflict-management skills.
  • Shares knowledge and supports other healthcare team members.
  • Uses preference card systems to identify equipment needs for specific cases.

4. Self-Development

  • Works with the Nurse Manager, Team Leader, and Equipment Coordinator Surgical Technologist to identify and address learning needs.
  • Meets all Department of Nursing annual training requirements.
  • Completes all MGH mandatory training and competency testing.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • CNA/PCA, instrument processing, biomedical, or related experience preferred.
  • Operating Room experience preferred.

SKILLS / ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.
  • Ability to lift to 40 lbs independently.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Successful completion of all required equipment and instrumentation competencies.
  • Successful completion of Peri-operative Aseptic Technique 1 and 2 (MGH OR staff development team).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work occurs in sterile and sub-sterile environments requiring full surgical attire (scrubs, hats, gloves, booties, gowns, goggles). Temperatures may exceed 70°F for extended periods. The environment is fast-paced, high-acuity, and detail-intensive. Frequent exposure to body fluids, tissue, needles, blades, and other sharp instruments requires strict adherence to safety protocols.
  • Rotating shifts with on-call responsibilities required.

Pay Range: 

$22.62-$23.66
