Practice Overview

Oliver Wyman’s Private Capital Practice advises leading private equity firms, principal investors, portfolio companies, and corporations across the investment and transaction lifecycle. We combine deep industry expertise, rigorous commercial analysis, and value creation capabilities to help clients make better investment decisions and deliver superior returns.

Our work spans commercial due diligence, investment and growth strategy, value creation, carve-outs, and deal-driven transformation. We support investors in assessing market attractiveness, competitive positioning, growth opportunities, and investment risks, and work with portfolio companies to translate these insights into tangible performance improvement.

Our teams work across sectors including Technology, Consumer and Retail, Telecommunications, Business Services, Transportation, Infrastructure, Industrials, Insurance, and Financial Services. In Japan, you will work with Japanese and international investors and corporations while collaborating closely with Oliver Wyman’s Private Capital and sector experts across Asia Pacific and globally.

What you will do

As an Associate / Engagement Manager, you will play a central role in delivering high-impact client engagements while taking increasing responsibility for team leadership, client relationships, and the development of our Private Capital business.

You will:

  • Structure complex problems by translating investment questions and strategic challenges into clear hypotheses, workstreams, and analytical priorities.

  • Lead commercial due diligence and value creation engagements, assessing market attractiveness, competitive dynamics, customer behaviour, business models, growth opportunities, and key investment risks.

  • Identify the critical value drivers behind an investment thesis, distinguishing the issues that can materially influence returns from those that are less consequential.

  • Design and oversee rigorous analyses, drawing on primary research, financial and operational data, market intelligence, expert interviews, and other sources to build fact-based perspectives.

  • Synthesize complex findings into clear investment implications and recommendations that can inform investment committee, management, and board-level decisions.

  • Translate diligence insights into actionable value creation opportunities, helping investors and portfolio company management teams identify and prioritize initiatives to accelerate growth, strengthen commercial performance, improve operations, or enhance strategic positioning.

  • Manage project teams and major workstreams, setting priorities, allocating responsibilities, coaching junior colleagues, and ensuring consistently high-quality delivery within demanding transaction timelines.

  • Own day-to-day client interactions, building trusted relationships with investment professionals, corporate executives, portfolio company management teams, and other stakeholders.

  • Communicate effectively with senior audiences, developing compelling presentations and confidently discussing findings, recommendations, risks, and areas requiring further investigation.

  • Collaborate across Oliver Wyman's global network, bringing together sector, functional, analytical, and geographic expertise to provide clients with differentiated perspectives.

  • Contribute to the growth of the Private Capital Practice in Japan, including developing intellectual capital, identifying emerging investment themes, supporting proposals, and contributing to client development initiatives.

  • Support the development of our people, providing thoughtful coaching and feedback and helping create an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team environment.

What you will bring

  • Approximately 4–8+ years of relevant professional experience, with the appropriate level determined by the depth of experience and demonstrated leadership capabilities.

  • Meaningful experience in commercial due diligence, private equity, corporate strategy, or value creation, ideally gained within a leading strategy consulting firm, transaction-focused advisory business, private capital investor, or relevant corporate strategy/in-house consulting environment.

  • A strong understanding of the investment lifecycle and transaction environment, with the ability to evaluate businesses through both a strategic and investor lens.

  • Experience leading project teams or significant workstreams, including managing competing priorities and delivering high-quality outputs under tight deadlines.

  • Strong commercial judgement and analytical capability, with the ability to work with quantitative and qualitative information, identify patterns and insights, challenge assumptions, and draw robust conclusions.

  • Excellent problem-solving and synthesis skills, including the ability to move from detailed analysis to the few conclusions that matter most to a client or investment decision.

  • The ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, concisely, and persuasively, both verbally and in written presentations.

  • Confidence working with senior clients and stakeholders, coupled with the judgement to understand their priorities and anticipate questions and concerns.

  • An entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to take ownership, seek out opportunities, and contribute beyond immediate project responsibilities.

  • Intellectual curiosity and creativity — you enjoy investigating unfamiliar markets and businesses, asking incisive questions, and developing new approaches to difficult problems.

  • A collaborative leadership style and genuine interest in coaching and developing colleagues.

  • Professional fluency in Japanese and English. For non-native Japanese speakers, JLPT N1 or equivalent business-level proficiency is expected.

  • Flexibility and willingness to travel depending on client and project requirements.
