About the role:
We're looking for a NOC Engineer to support the continuous monitoring, triage and escalation of production alerting across our global exchange, and to facilitate our established production incident process.
This position reports directly to Engineering Lead Manager Service Operations and will work closely with members of the wider NOC and Technology Operations Division.
This role forms part of our continuous 24/7 shift coverage, including weekend days, with the flexibility to cover other shifts as required.
What we’re looking for:
Our NOC watches the exchange continuously, every hour of every day, on shifts worked from Toronto, London and Bangalore. Whoever takes this role is the first person to see a production problem, and the person who decides what happens next.
This is a highly independent shift, and the judgment calls are yours to make. We're looking for someone methodical enough to follow a documented process precisely, and confident enough to act on the evidence in front of them when there's no documented process to follow.
Here’s what you’ll be doing:
- Continuously monitoring our production alerting across dashboards, metrics, synthetic monitoring, alert email and other alerting sources.
- Triaging and correlating each alert from its alert documentation: reading the severity and SLA, gathering the evidence the runbook asks for, actioning what you have the access and the steps to action, and escalating to the service or application owners with your findings.
- Starting and facilitating production incidents — opening the incident, standing up the channel, bringing the right teams in, and making sure the process is followed and stakeholders stay updated.
- Holding first response on behalf of our partner-facing teams outside their working hours, performing outreach and making the mitigation call yourself within clearly documented limits.
- Maintaining our own NOC runbooks and dashboards so they remain accurate and current, and, for service-owned documentation, confirming ownership with the responsible team and raising the work to get gaps corrected.
- Triaging vendor maintenance notices to the right internal owners.
- Handing live work over to the incoming engineer in conversation, walking them through anything still open, and keeping a written record as things happen
Here's what you need:
- Proven experience in a 24/7 production operations, NOC or SRE-adjacent environment, with the process discipline and judgment to work a shift with limited support around you.
- Proficient in Linux operating systems including command-line navigation, file system management, and shell scripting
- Fluency with observability tooling: Grafana or comparable metrics and dashboard platforms, plus infrastructure and synthetic monitoring. You should be comfortable narrowing a dashboard down to the right data center and partner to tell a regional problem from a global one.
- Strong systems and networking fundamentals, with proven ability to interpret latency, packet loss and timeouts, and to distinguish a metrics interruption from a genuine service interruption or degradation.
- Runbook discipline, and the judgment for when there isn't one. Most of this role is following documented process precisely. Where no runbook exists, you'll confirm who the service or application owners are and log a ticket against that team, so one is created for handling the alert in future.
- Excellent written communication. Your escalations, handovers and incident updates need to give an engineer in another time zone everything required to act, without a follow-up conversation.
- Calm under pressure, and genuinely comfortable with autonomy.
- The ability to work in-office in Bangalore as part of a 24/7 shift roster that includes weekend days and public holidays.
