What we are looking for:

The primary purpose of the Stewardship Forester is to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Forests Resource Division in the North Cascade District. Duties include:

  • Work with private landowners to maintain the productivity of their forestland and the associated wildlife, soil, water and air resources by administering the Forest Practices Act and providing technical assistance to non-industrial private landowners that will allow them to attain their objectives for their forestland.
  • Enforces statutes and Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR’s) that require certain fire precautions and equipment for operations on private and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) forest land.
  • Coordinate with the Wildland Fire Supervisor (WFS) to administer the Smoke Management Program requirements for operations on forestland in the Unit.
  • Make recommendations for approval or denial of non-industrial landowner applications for federal or state funds for a number of different federal and state cost-share programs.
  • Will be the primary contact private landowners have with the Department’s programs and regulatory function.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years of experience in Forestry or and/or a closely related natural resource program, AND a bachelor's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resource program.

OR

Three additional years of related (pertinent) experience.

OR
One year of experience in Forestry and/or a closely related natural resource program AND a master's degree in Forestry or a closely related natural resources program.

Note: Driver’s License Check - This position requires the operation of a state vehicle for the purpose of conducting official State business. If your license is from outside Oregon, you must submit at least a three-year court/DMV printout.  If you have an Oregon driver’s license, a record check will be conducted on the top candidate to ensure a valid license and acceptable driving record.

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge and understanding of administration of the Forest Practices Act on Private, County & State lands.
  • Knowledge and understanding of administration of ORS Chapter 477 regulations and enforcing industrial fire prevention inspections on operations in the fire protection district on private and BLM lands.
  • Ability to make recommendations on reforestation, precommercial thinning, vegetation management, rehabilitation and harvesting standards.
  • Ability to make decisions regarding standards for buffer strips along streams, Road construction and maintenance methods, resource protection, slash quantity and compliance with the Smoke Management Plan.
  • Ability to audit and to evaluate compliance with Oregon Revised Statues (ORS) Chapters 477 and 527 and related OAR’s on private forestland.
